I've just finished my first few tanks of fuel in my Chimaera, and have noted it to rather like a drink. My first full tank only managed 170 miles, which comes out at a rather pathetic 14 mpg. Ok, so this was when I first got the car, so chances are that my right foot was slightly heavier than usual. But two subsequent tanks, both of which have been used on motorway journeys with a much more economical driving style, have only just scraped past 200 miles - about 17 mpg.

Ok, so I wasn't expecting the quoted 28mpg to be acheiveable unless changing gears at 2000rpm every time, but at least 20mpg would be nice, particularly on the motorway when I'm being frugal.

I've seen threads on here with people talking about 24mpg being the norm... so are these lucky people the exception to the rule, or have I just bought the TVR Chimaera 'George Best Special Edition'?????

Gareth,

I don't know what size engine you have, but when I had my 4ltr I used average around 23/24mpg.

If I was going on a run, doing mainly motorway driving, I used to get 28ish.

Neil.

Sorry - mine's a 450! Still think I should be up near your figures. Maybe needs a visit to the engine fairies... anyone know of any particular thing to look at that could be making it less economical?

check your timing-the ecu does not control this like it does on more sophisticated cars by other manufacturers of same era.so it can only alter fueling as best as poss for given ignition set up.also worth checking plugs for wear and correct gap.woth bearing in mind though that driving style is a major factor, thinking that keeping the revs low is economical can actually increase fuel consumption if theyre too low for instance, as your starting to labour the engine.

Gareth,
I get a regular 24mpg from my Griff 500 and IIRC previous threads have agreed with this sort of consumption. Have you got a service due soon? Maybe just a tune up required?

Bargain !! - my 450 gets.....

wait for it...

about 110 miles between refills - a miserable average of just over 10MPG (mostly around town, stop/start)

Even on a trip to the UK last year it only got up to about 17 average.

Remove the vacuum advance pipe from the plenum and give a good suck and pop your tongue on the end of it, if the vacuum disapears then its buggered. I have replaced 4 on my 6 V8s in the past 6 years! There are many versions but there are part Nos on the side of it, if its bug---d. No need to comment on test!!

Well here goes:- 4L Chim 98 R reg. Purchased in October 2002 mileage when brought 10375.
To date, mileage so far 2558, Litres used 647 (gals 143) Average price/Gal £3.58 miles per Gal = 20.19!

Mostly medium sized runs, 100 mile averaged.

So my average MPG works out at 20, much what I expected.

If my maths are wrong I will be pleasantly surprised or bitterly disappointed.

With my 95 (500 )I manage 12.5 l/ 100 km (around 22.6 miles per gallon) easily. Even with some city stop and go traffic included.

Having said that, with a more heavy right foot this numbers can change dramatically.
