Hi,

I was wondering if it would be possible to make an old F1 car road legal.

What would you have to do?

an example of a non road legal www.pistonheads.com/sales/122770.htm

Thanks

Anything's possible if you throw enough money at it.

Not everything's worth the trouble though. Making an F1 car road-legal comes into this category.

When you've spent a shed load of money spoiling the F1 car - how much better would it be on the road than a well sorted something that was legal to start with?

Basically it's "just" the SVA test & registration - simple!
I can however assure you it would be pretty impossible to use that sort of performance on the road (certainly down this end of the country anyway), mine has about 400bhp a ton & does 0-60 in about 3 secs, that's quite stupid enough, the idea of around 12-1400 bhp per ton (say 700bhp, 600kg)doesn't bear thinking about!

Next to impossible - if you still want it to look and drive like one.

Lights have to meet minimum height requirements (not like the one in the photo)!

All the various sharp edges need to be covered / removed,

Noise regs and emissions regs (depending on how old the car is) need to be complied with.

Still need it to be able to get over speed bumps.

Probably (though not necessarily legally) need a reverse gear.

Mirrors will be difficult to get to pass the rearward field of view requirements...

...& so on.

not to mention getting spare parts, just popping down to partco to get a set of ceramic discs might be a problem.

Although if you are looking for the F1 style MK engineering is working on a tasty looking single seater kit car, powered by a motorcycle engine.

Fantastic car! Drove it at Brands Hatch a couple of weeks ago (full story in the next issue ). Only about £8000 to build too, which makes it very tempting!

Plenty of BECs have SVAd with no reverse gear. Why would mirrors be a problem - you don't have to use those weeny F1 jobbies!

I like it too, but would have thought that a complete build would have been 4-5K, and not 8000£!!!!!.

A little steep for a single seater, that will be pretty much a trackday car ......I wonder what is the price for a used old formula car ?

Anything from about £15000 upwards (for something VERY obscure & with no engine or gearbox) to buy anything halfway reasonable in decent running condition probably £80k upwards.

Sorry just noticed you said "Formula car" not "Formula 1 car", in which case about £4-5k for a tidy old Formula Ford - you'd spend at least that again to get it thro' SVA tho', plus loads of work - & it would look like a Formula Ford.

...and wouldn't be as 'roadable' as the MK.

I agree that reverse isn't a legal requirement to have a reverse gear but in practical terms it's pretty hard to live with a car tha tdoesn't when used on public roads - although I do accept that it wouldn't be any worse to live with than a BEC with no reverse.

The mirrors need to meet a minimum field of view requirement and when you're sat down low in the middle of a car with big rear tyres sticking out (which would need mudguards too if driven on a raod) it can be extremely difficult to see past them to get that required field of view. Most people end up putting them on poles to raise them up but then the rear wing gets in the way.

Reverse gear in an open wheel car like that would be a pair of walking sticks you pushed yourself backwards with.

I see as usual Russ is hiding his light under a bushell. Adam W you guys should do a feature on his car, it's bigger, better & far more versatile than the MK Sprint (for a start it's a 2 seater) & as I understand it can have car or bike engines so you can have reverse if you want, it's also about the most jaw dropping vehicle I've ever seen.

Not really my cup of tea.
however, If my next door neighbour bought one I would..........

...move house.
I feel as though the whole idea of building an F1 car for the road must have been dreamt up by someone who spent the 1990's out partying with Bez from the Happy Mondays.
And Borat would not be interested in dating any member of their family.

Hiya Dave, Now come on,don't beat about the bush come out & say what you mean! You have explained someing tho', my next door neighbour has been trying to sell his house for about 3 years!! I don't know Bez & wouldn't want my daughters (or son for that matter) to go out with Borat. Seriously, I have no problem with your opinion - I am well aware it is a "Marmite car" (perhaps that's what I should have called it, might have got sponsorship from them!), strange thing is that when they see it "in the flesh" everybody seems to love it. Also I can now lip read "what the F........" at around 300yds!!! Whatever your opinion there are others that will balance things the other way, I have people seriously pestering me to get the car into full production (chassis are now available & the first panels - sidepods & nose are ready, the bucks go to for moulds to be taken this week).

I like to be thought of as somewhat eccentric with a flair for the design of the unusual, you could of course substitute for this "Nutter, weirdo, d**khead etc."

The car is bigger than the MK, I wouldn't say that makes it any better, just aimed at a different segment of the market, I've seen the MK & chatted to Martin about it, I think it is an excellent car & good value considering the number of new parts in the kit, but, personally, I couldn't/can't see much point in a single seater for the road unless you've either got no mates at all or have a load of mates all prepared to buy similar cars so you can go for a hoon together.

Where my "one-off" original car scores is on performance, it will out accelerate every Lambo & Porsche ever built & all Ferrari's with the possible exception of the Enzo, it didn't cost quite that much!

Did you ever see that ad campaign ,I think it was for Peugeot ,where a bloke goes to work in a digger and another in a F1 car ? The slogan was - what did you want to do when you grew up ? (or something similar). I think the fact we all love cars means there`s a little bit of kid left in all of us ,but wanting to drive that in public is a step way over the line .
