Stackmonkey's woes...
Discussion
So the Starkholmes lot will know that I got made redundant at the end of last month..
Faced with this I spent some time, effort and capital trying to reduce my monthly outgoings, put the Chim up for sale, and various other measures.
I also managed to get myself a job offer fairly quickly, for a decent job, albeit with a long commute.
With the imminent loss of my previous company car, and the promise of a job I've been out and bought new suit, shirts, tie, and a more expensive car than I would otherwise have done(ie spent about 2-3times as much)., started going out again etc.
Then I find out that my job offer has been withdrawn due to some unspecified problem with my reference from work...
Cue lots of phone calls to employer in question, previous employer, union, job agencies, etc
Really not a happy bunny.

What a total pain in the ass.......
It is of limited comfort right now I know but, for what it is worth, I tend to think that these things happen for a reason & if these were people who rely on the judgement of others rather than their own assessment of you, you've probably had a lucky escape.
Oh, and if you got one offer on the table quick sticks, you'll get another one too.
Good luck buddy!

I thought the law was that you were allowed to see the reference, especially if it was bad in some way or cost you the next job? I was told you could sue your old company if they gave you an inaccurate reference?
Either way its a tough break Mike. What about that other job?

You will - easy for us to say/hard for you to believe but if you got one offer on the table quickly, you'll get another one (or more) just as fast

employment law states you cant give a bad reference.
thats a bit of bollox though really cos if HR aint got the time to give you a reference it looks bad in the eyes of the new employer.
its also a load of bollox in the way that my previous 3 employers couldnt be assed writing out a reference so just sent me an email, asked me to write it up so they could send it

best to stay on good terms with your employer no matter what they do

hope you find somthing soon, if you get hassle from former employer give me a nod, used to run 2 companies as MD for both and we had 27 staff on the books, I know a bit about it but im no expert, would be glad to help though if I can.
cheers.
Sorry to hear this bad news. I am sure that you will find another job soon and when you do, you'll no doubt be delighted that you left the last place. Is there nobody else that you can go to for a reference? Pardon me for stating the obvious, but what about an old lecturer? Or an old supplier or client? Do you or have you done any voluntary work in recent years? Maybe cast the net wider? How about a complete change, a move to another county? This could be a chance for a fresh start! The universe always provides
