Anyone else underwhelmed with MEGUIARS
Discussion
Spent a fortune on buying exclusively MEGUIARS products for my new pride and joy and I must confess I can't see what the fuss is about.
I have tried everything (including 3 phone calls to their helpline) and still cannot get the greasy paint cleaner off my car. I polished it with TURTLEWAX HI-GLOSS when I got it home (was all I had) and have Clay-bared, cleansed, polished and waxed untill my hands have dried up and it looks NO better to me or the better half.
Another annoying point, why the hell can't they put the full friggin instructions on the bleedin tin, my physic powers aren't what they used to be. Apparently you are supposed to remove step 1 and 2 before they dry, as the Americans would put it "I guess I'll try that"!!!!!!
Feels like I have wasted £80 on marketing, not impressed at all.

It depends a lot on what condition the paint is in when you start. Working by hand, if you have swirls they are damn near impossible to completely remove.
If it's a brand new car I am a little surprised as you'd obviously be working on the best possible surface.
Meguiars do make some very good stuff, but tbh I tend to mix and match rather than stick to one brand as there are few who do everything well.

must admit i've not been impressed. Bought their car shampoo and don't rate it at all, and think the wax is crap
I used basic Halford car shampooo with wax before and followed it with turtle wax in the tin and it was great, this Meguiars wax hardly beads the water up afterwards. And the shampoo doesn;t bubble up much. Their alloy brush wash useless too.
I quite liked the clay bar though, although I haven't tried others.

Over the years i've tried many products and have always been impressed with Meguiars. It really depends on your preparation IMO as i'm sure one of the Professional Detailers on the forum will confirm.
Now i'm only a novice when it comes to cleaning, but I find the following products and procedure works extremely well by hand for me, particularly on darker colours.
Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo & Microfibre Wash Mitt
Zymol Lehm Clay and Lehm-Lube 2
Meguiars Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish
Zymol Carbon Wax
Meguiars Gold Class Endurance High Gloss Tyre Gel is also the easiest applied and longest lasting product for tyres IMO.

Amazed someone is not happy with the Megs car shampoo. The Gold Class is very good, have to admit though the NXT wash (the purple stuff) was poor in comparison. I too have made the mistake of leaving Stage 2 to dry and then had a hard time removing it all.
Zaino is too much like hard work, same with Zymol (I like their shampoo too though). Some of the AG stuff is good, some not. Give their tyre dressing a go, have found that to be good.
I'm still experimenting really, mixing and matching as I go. I want something that will make the car look good but not take all day to achieve.

Try Zaino,i tried all the other brands previously and the finish i get with Zaino is awesome and dare i say it better than most Zymol treated cars..check Zaino's website worth a look. Ive been pretty pleased with the results from the gold shampoo, wax polish, rubber treatment and leather treatment stuff so far... All goes on and comes off easy enough, and the result is very pleasing to the eye. Could there be differences in results according to regional water quality etc (referring to the shampoo not foaming up as mentioned above)?
I did mess up with the wheel cleaner though and didnt read the instructions about rinsing off within 20 seconds of applying. Thankfully no harm done but I really should learn to read the instructions first...

Indeed!
I've always found their products spot on.
I've got Gold Class shampoo and it's the best I've ever used - foams up beautifully. The clay was magic and I've just got some wheel brightener which I'm told is the best of the bunch.
If you're not noticing tangible results then get it pro-detailed and see what difference they make?

Speaking as someone who does only a fairly basic level of car care, I agree with the OP. I used Gold Class Shampoo and Wax for the first time recently. The shampoo wasn't as good as the Autoglym I normally use and the Wax was considerably more time-consuming to remove, without the results looking any better than the Autoglym Deep Gloss.
I haven't tried the Clay bar though and, from what I've read, it sounds pretty good.

I'm not trying to scare monger but be careful with the wheel brightener (assuming you mean the gallon "detailer" product).
It's very concentrated and I've read a few stories of people doing damage by not diluting it sufficiently or leaving it on too long etc.
The Megs stuff I have tried and would definitely rate is the Gold Glass, the All Purpose Cleaner, the Clay Kits, and the applicators. IMHO most of their other stuff is probably better than the normal over the counter stuff, but if you are ordering a few bits in one go and don't mind stumping up P&P you can get better by mixing products from the online car car stores.

Preperation is the key.
I washed it, Clay-barred used Crystal paint cleaner (step 1) and polished (step 2) before Waxing (step 3).
Exactly how much more preparation could I do??
I've found that the key to the Crystal Paint Cleaner & Polish is not to leave them on the panel too long
, I generally do a small panel/half panel at a time and then take off with a clean microfibre, any longer and it becomes a PITA to take off. C.
