Starter Update

Following on from my recent starter problems and search for a solution I ordered a Racemettle starter which arrived today. I'm pleasantly suprised at the differecne between this the Tilton and 2 other varieties I've tried which all came to nought.
It's a much smaller and lighter unit so it's a bit easier to fit and seems to be generally better engineered. Pics below show some of the differences.
Apart from the size the drive gear runs on a shaft sitting in a bearing on the front of the casing and is operated by a Bendix gear.
You can see the difference to the original Tilton unit
I've fitted it this afternoon and it's working fine, seems to spin more quickly than the others and starts the engine quickly which suggests to me it's more highly geared.
Anyway time will tell if it's a solution to the starter motor woes some of us have suffered but I really hope this solves mine.

It looks good and seems well engineered. The claims are interesting, less weight, less power consumption, better cranking and smaller - easier to fit.

Cost is £440 inc. on exchange else add £100 plus £10 p&p. Steve is the chap who builds them, very helpful give him a bell if you're interested.

Thanks mate I'm getting a bit preoccupied with starters now but I've stopped short of a ven diagram and pie chart, but yeah I agree it's a lot of dough but I've had enough of the tried and tested(?) batch of starters. I'm on no. 4 now so I'm hoping (but not expecting) it to be money well spent if it gives a few yeas of trouble free starting but mainly restores my confidence so I don't have to try and park on a steep hill every time I stop.
For the record I've tried to kill it by running it for a minute at a time with the fuel pump fuse out - which it passed and then 10 proper starts one after the other hot and cold - again no trouble. Probably broke something else doing it but heh you gotta find out somehow.

They do but there's currently a supply problem with the TVR George Cross but we'll get back to you in a couple of months when the parts are available.

i suppose if the starter gives you a couple of years trouble free starting then it will be more cost effective than buying the other makes hope it proves so, but its one of of those again only time will tell but hopefully in a few years we will all be fitting them knowing they will perform admirably, i must say again though it certainly looks the dogs

Yep, tried that but best I managed was 3 weeks with anyhting other than the original Tilton. I think it's more a case that for some lucky owners starter problems are a rarity so £400 plus is silly money for a replacement, but for others like me it's a continual problem and destroys your confidence in the car in which case £400 might seem like a bargain.
Anyway too early to tell if this is money well spent or just snake oil.
