Hi,
I know the general purpose of the swirl pot is to reduce fuel surges etc, but how essential is it?

I've just bought another wedge - 280iFHC, I last had one about 7 years ago which I rewired and sorted out various mechanical aliments and got it back on the road.

My current wedge is again a non runner (I like a challenge!), however I've got it started by soldering up a broken track inside the Purple Safety relay. It pretty much starts every time, but as soon as you put any load on the engine it dies, looking at various manuals etc it looks like it might be a fuel delivery problem?? I started looking at this last weekend, but ran out of time, but during a detailed inspection of the fuel system I noticed that the swirl pot was missing and replaced with a simple 'T' piece between the 2 tanks.

The first thing I'm going to check is the fuel return and then progress on from there. I don't think the missing swirl pot is causing the problem as the fault is occuring when I move it on the driveway. I'm not subjecting the car to lots of movement that would cause surging, but I wondered if any of you guys might know better or have any suggestions.

cheers

It the "T" piece of a large enough bore to allow adequate fuel to pass?

Yes the T piece is made out of standard domestic 15mm copper pipe.I guess the supply quantity is sufficient as it is taking 15mm from each tank to the fuel pump...

My Tasmin has run without a swirlpot and only hiccups occasionally under maximum acceleration. The only difference I noticed on mine was the return pipe from the fuel injection has a T piece with one pipe going back into the nearside tank and the other pipe feeding into the main 15mm pipe from both tanks that feed the pump. Speaking to somebody about a year ago they said that some cars went out from the factory without swirlpots if they had run out of stock. I don't know how true that was. Currently I am fitting a 6 gallon competition tank in the boot and am not sure whether to fit a swirl pot or not.
