Turbo Tim's thread has prompted me to ask a question re M42 cameras (J3a - J7 - Northbound).... whether or not the speed restrictions are displayed my Snooper indicates that most of the cameras are active. I was told that the type on M42 do not flash to record your speed. When doing 70 (with the cameras supposedly active and my Snooper having a fit) cars are still flying past me - are all these lot being done? Apologies if this has been posted before.

I was under the impression that speed cameras on Motorways are not in force unless there is a reduced speed limit in force.

I was thinking about this the other day, as I approached one of the gantrys on the M25 at a resonable speed they came on and showed 60, I didn't have time to reduce my speed to that level and was wondering if they have a delay on the activation of the camera

Sorry didn't realise this was in the Midlands section!

One would hope there is a delay, but in this day and age I wouldn't count on it.

Reminds me of a story told by a fellow PistonHead parked at traffic lights. Ambulance (or fire engine) behind with all the lights on, so he edged his way forward and out of the way to allow the emergency vehicle through. Was done for jumping a red light.

A highways engineer mate of mine tells me the M42 gantry cameras are only active when a temporary speed restriction is showing and that their tolerance is very low.

No idea of any timing delay.

I hate this section of motorway its just a big load of shi*e!

I drive down there most nights about 11ish and theres no traffic no workforce no brocken cars etc etc and theres a 40 displayed then next one National speed limit then maybe another 40. I swear they are only there to catch you out.

I rang the place that operates them and they were so reluctant to tell me anything about the system and how it runs/operates.

Rant over....lol

I wondered this too.... Doing 50ish in a 50 and people just storm past!

Use it every day (8am and 6pm so cant comment on 11pm!) and its brilliant bow

thats sooo true! i go down there and its empty and it says 50mph then 40. a friend has been down there at over twice the speed limit and nothing happened to him, but when it says 50mph i go 50mph but i see other cars going faster, one day i thought the signs were saying 60mph so i went down at 60mph only to see they were saying 50mph and nothing happened, however its better to stick at the speed limit as the speed detector flashes. the m42 on that stretch is very slow also with not many people going over 80mph even when no speed limits are signed up

They only work if the limited speed circles are showing. Not risked it but no problems if they show NSL or are blank.

FFG Do you know why detectors go beserk then? As I mentioned at start of thread that is my worry as whenever I go under the gantries with or without display over head I have full reading on my Snooper.

whoever's job is to put the signs on is a bellend as today they were at 40mph and for no reason as traffic was not heavy at all and was only 40mph for one tiny stretch...it caused the traffic to get all messed up as people dramatically slowing down...for no reason!

i travel along this tretch everyday, from m6 link to m42 j6.

I don't risk the cameras if nothing is displayed, just sit at 70.

Lately though the person controlling the lanes must be one who doesn't like the 4 lane section as quite a few evenings they have put 40mph and only 3 lanes, which causes huge delays and there is no obstruction in the 1st lane!!

If I had to travel along that section of the M42 daily I'd change my job!

Someone has to start some sort of petition to get these particular variable speed limits removed as quite frankly they are a joke. I've nearly been run off the road on this stretch by an artic who was more interested in his speed than that of other road users and I have yet to see a reason, other than the obvious one of generating cash, for reducing traffic from 70mph to 40mph to 60mph to 40mph in the space of 2 junctions!

Rant over

Not sure. I've not got a snooper or otherwise.

Could it be that your Snooper is running on its database of locations, not actually detecting a signal?

Just a thought.

My Road Angel works on its database too - I reckon that the laser detector is a waste of time. Once it has picked up the beam and you have [cough] slowed down sufficiently, the laser gun has already got a fix on you and is processing the ticket...

You really need to get a garage door opener.

And an automatic garage door.

Eventually.

Brisel... garage door opener works perfectly as does Snooper S5 detector. There appears to be a form of detection whether or not cameras are recording your speed - my point is that it is worrying to proceed at or above the speed limit (whether stated or not) with detector buzzer going beserk.
