Just found out with my Freelander TD4 Sports I have to pay 300 pounds road tax this year! Even though, it has the lowest emission among Land Rover range.
It's not fare that I have to pay the same as a Range Rover Supercharged! In fact if you drive a 8L W16 Veyron, you will pay the same as my 2.0 TD4.

Are you sure? I'm bloody sure my Discovery Td5 is only Band E - don't see how a Freelander can be worse.
Indeed, according to www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/search.asp and www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524 your Freelander is Band F.

I would check again.... I think you will find a Discovery highly placed in Band G
Depends on how old it is though, if it is pre 23 March 06 registered then it can't be higher than Band F as there is no Band G for cars older than that; agree however the Zumbruks would be G if post this date and F if pre, but either way should not be Band E.
Looking at the Freelander figures (using Parkers data) I think I can see where there is a problem. The current Freelander has Td4 emissions of 224 for the Auto, conveniently just under the Band G threshold and hence is Band F - However for the previous model the Auto is listed as 240, hence if you have an 06 run out previous Freelander AND it was registered after 23 March 2006 then it would I guess be band G, Parkers curiously still lists it as being in Band F but I guess as that model spans before and after the March 06 threshold they didn't or couldn't easily take that into account.
I assume this is the case for loveice and guess that pretty much sucks, going to be £400 for you by 2008 as well

Thanks for the information. Mine was registered in January 2006 (55 plate). So does it mean it should belong to band F rather than band G? Coz like you said before March 2006 there isn't even a band G. And the fact is all Freelander MK1(before or after facelift) TD4 Auto/Man have the same emission. So does it mean the very first(90s) Freelander TD4 Auto also belongs to band G? Do I need to explain that although mine is one of the last MK1 Freelander (which does produce 240 emission), it's actually registered before March this year to my local post office? Really confused now.
PS. I knew I should buy that Prius at the first place! 400 pounds road tax in 2008, that's more than my insurance. Well, let's see how good the MK3 Prius will be!

If it is Registered in Jan 06 then there has been a cock up somewhere and there is no way it can be Band G - least that it my understanding of it. Sadly I suspect you will have to deal directly with the DVLA on this one, the post office, whilst they will see the logic, probably can't overrule what is says on your reminder.
Talk about overcomplicating a system that is perfectly well governed by taxing fuel - you use more you pay more, pretty simple and effective one would have thought.

Can someone explain the present tax position, if you buy an older Range Rover (I am looking at a 1990 model) then is it just charged as a normal vehicle? also are there other additional cost's being brought in? (I do remember hearing somthing about raising the insurance tax on 4x4s in a radio snippet) by the way is around a £1000 about right for a fairly clean 1990 Vogue, sorry for obvious questions but this 4x4 stuff is a recent idea

The current increase in road exise duty affects vehicles registered new after march 06.I think the extra increase you will incur will be about £10 on a years tax.Depending on clean it is.I normally find that you have to spend decent money in order to get a decent Classic. There are far to many roppey ones about. I Know i am a bit late with this posting .Just Re Taxed my Freelander Freestyle.New on the 18th March 2006 , it was £195.up by
£25.
£25.
Just retaxed my car today. Although on the letter from DVLA it says 195 pounds (like yours). But when I paid on online the system asked me for 205 pound (10 pounds more). Don't know why. Anyway, still better than what I thought at first place.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I am in the process of building a V8 Westfield with a 5 litre V8.
Everything is new apart from teh engine which was made in 1991, will I get away with paying the lower road tax charge.

Yes
The new rates apply to cars registered after 1/3/2001 and registered against a type approval for co etc.
Your car is not type approved so will be 'Private/light goods' over 1549cc and cost £180.
