I am currently selling the 997 due to many reasons including practical and financial issues and did the sensible thing by buying a 3 series as an everyday car for the wife and myself.

However we fancy trying a 4wd (partly due to my wifes job)as a family car and the Cayenne seems to fit the bill.

I have already decided if I went for one it would be the 4.5 S model, probably 2004 around 20 to 30,000 miles with the following options:
Black with black leather
Tiptronic
19 or 20 inch wheels
Air suspension
Sat nav
Telephone
Cruise

I am interested to hear from anyone who is currently running a similar model,
how is it as a daily car?
what to look for if I am buying private?
Does the extended Porsche warranty apply to the Cayenne?(101 point inspection at OPC and around 800 pounds per year).
What is the real life fuel consumption?
Service costs?
What do you think I would need to pay for a private sale?
Any comments good or bad are welcome.

Kev.

PLEASE...PLEASE ...AVOID!

I recently sold my wifes Cayenne S - exact same Spec as you mention - had 20" wheels and 20,000 miles when we got rid.

If you want a 4X4 - get a "proper" Range Rover (not the Chav Chariot one) - or even an Amazon. If you want a comfy saloon - get a new S class - if you want a sport car - keep the 997! If you want a partially compromised soft-roader get a Q7 or indeed one of the new X5's (even though they will be ten a penny within six months)

The Cayenne was the MOST compromised car we have EVER owned (and that is saying something!) - it is neither fish nor fowl - too "sporty" (read; crashy suspension, jittery ride, indecisive auto-box) to be a proper relaxed off-roader ; and too soft to be a proper sports saloon (blame the weight, CofG and shitty garbox!).

On top of that the build quality is poor (numerous rattles, loose trim and poor plastics - have a look in an Audi Q7 for a marked contrast!), resiudals are tumbling, economy is poor, gearboxes fail, software for autoboxes and engine mangement need constant fettling/updating, ignition coils and injector packs fail etc. you get the picture.

Seriously - I am a life long Porsche fan (I am on my 17th 911 derivative) ....BUT the Cayenne is a poorly (East German?) made VW substitute.

I got offered the very first "Facelift" Cayenne at a "good deal"...BUT turned it down.

If you must ...try and get an extended test drive (a full day should do it) - the novlety of the Power soon wears off - and if you take it on some country roads you will soon tire of the p!ss poor autobox and suspension!

Use ours every day 15 miles each way to work, plus weekends. No where near as much boot space as you might think, big 3 wheel pushchair fills it, so i end up putting shopping in rear foot wells.
It pick ups speed pretty quick for a 2 ton car, which is good for motorways. It handles well relatively speaking! but its just too heavy to chuck around, you still have to stop the thing!

Go for the warranty and extend it (IMHO). The early ones had loads of glitches and gremlins. Though touch wood all sorted now, and been fine since.

Fuel consumption - Best you will see is 21mpg on the motorway. 12-14mpg on commute. £75 to fill up (a week!)

Servicing - every 2 years, not sure of cost yet
Tyres - budget a set a year - £700-£800 if you shop around.

I like it, but wouldnt buy another. Probably go for audi s4 avant/bmw 545d (check the stats!)

A great car. Had one from new for 3 years and whilst some annoying teething problems disapointed given the depreciation we knew we were going to suffer (I had offset the depreciation against the fact the car would be perfect), it was a great car overall.

I like the sporty feel as it means you can throw the thing around (especially the turbo we are currently running !), and size-wise it fits the bill for a busy family.

In terms of your exacting spec I would be a little more open in an attempt to bring more cars into scope allowing your money to work the hardest it can for you. Certainly air suspension is desirable as it vastly improves the ride. The steel sprung cars can feel bumpy. Sat Nav seems de-rigeur an tidies up the interior. Wheel wise the cars actually run better on 18 inch but look better on 19 /20`s.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Dealmaker, what sort of price did you sell for and did it have air suspension?
The last 2 911's I had both had tip and I like the box so that should not be an issue.
I would certainly need a good road test before making up my mind.

What about the 3.2 is there a big difference on fuel economy and peformance anyone????

We had a 3.2 for 6 weeks when our brand new X5 was shunted.

We couldn't wait to get rid of the Cayenne it was dreadful. The autobox was the worst part about it, you could hear m.o.h going down the road in it and think he was going to take off, but he was only doing about 20. It was as though it wouldn't change up.

There is a huge difference detween a 3.2 the 4.5 or Turbo, a totally different car altogether.

I had a 4.5 on demo from our OPC for a few days and we were suprised that the fuel economy between the 4.5 and the 3.2 was only 1 mpg. In fairness if I was buying one, it would be a 4.5

I have a 997S which is used occasionly but my wife has a 4.5S which is our family car and used everyday. I think is fantastic, although fuel economy and tyres are not the best. We get 14-15mpg around town and about 20-21mpg on a run.

Tyres seem to last about 6,000 miles each and cost around £900 to replace, we have the 20" wheels on ours. We looked at all 4x4's and test drove them before buying but I must admit, although I'm a Porsche fanatic, this was the best of the lot!

My sister has just purchased a brand new Range Rover Sport shes done 110 miles in the first couple of days and since that point its been back at Range Rover who are unable to start it! She's now running around in a loan vehicle Discovery!!!

If you can justify the running cost of a Cayenne then certainly buy one you won't be disappointed ... I'm considering placing an order for the new Cayenne Turbo I'm that impressed!

Hilarious... this from a guy who has stated on another forum that the responses he received on PH to a question "he" posed were "amateur". It's good to see that yet again he is dispensing invaluable and purposeful advice based upon personal experience of the vehicle in question to the OP on this thread.

Well, I'm a sad muppet who likes to pretend he's Inspector Morse...so stay in on a Saturday night....but with that collection of cars I thought you'd have more of life. That aside, they just all seem so similar..apart from the Cayanne which just ruins anyone's creditibilty as a Porsche Enthusiast.

Anway, where do you keep them all and how do you decide which you are going to use? Are they all the same colour? Do you have a nice pic of them together-your drive must look amazing (I assume it cant be seen from the main road and all those cars are kept well behind a big gate)...

I don't think you qualify for Kev's current owner criteria. Apologies for going off track by the way Kev but you'll find a lot of tiresome rubbish proffered by non-owners whenever the word Cayenne pops up. Do a search and you'll find most of your questions answered on other recent threads.

As for your questions paracetemol, exactly why would I not qualify as a Porsche enthusiast because I own a Cayenne? I also own three "proper" Porsches as you would probably childishly put it plus I've previously owned another 987, a 997 C2 Tip and a 997 C2S. I think that more than qualifies me as an enthusiast. I've also owned the model of car you are currently looking at buying and sold it to another poster over the Ferrari/Lambo forum who has just bought a G Spyder.

And as for a Boxster, Cayman S and 997 TT being similar...... ??? Exactly what school of car enthusiast do you belong to? Each one is completey different which you'd realise if you'd ever driven them all but then again perhaps not as you evidently feel suitably well informed to judge a car without driving it

One day you will learn to spell..... it is a CayEnne for gawd's sake. At least get it right if you are going to babble on endlessly about your dislike for it. I'm done here as you are just too tiresome and self opinionated to bother with.
