Don't forget to ask on specialist Mercedes forums... after all, it's a 4 door Mercedes in actuality, and no more of a Porsche than say an Audi RS2. And that is definitely an Audi and not a Porsche to driveand in terms of character. Never driven an E500, but the manufacturing angle never really stacked up for me. I mean, Prodrive make Astons these days but an Aston feels very different from a Subaru!

a colleague at an old practice I used to work at had a W124 E500

serious bit of kit, hewn from granite quality and absolutely huge

only down side was the drink problem - it was his company car and his fuel cost was double anyone elses

I've had a couple of E500's!! Rock solid build quality, still a quick car even by today's standards but since it's been a good couple of years since I've owned one, it probably feels quite dated now!

Get an Audi S8 for 8-12K... 360 BHP, OK chassis, bose hifi, total comfort. A blast to drive.

Rowan Atkinson had one, when they were current.

More of an Autobahn stormer than tactile sports saloon.

Later S8, M5, AMG Merc, etc probably better.

Drove one when i was in the market myself a few years back - excellent car. Build quality like Mercs of old, and prodigous torque is my main memory...

I have one and my other cars are a Mini Cooper and a Porsche racer. The S8 is of course more remote than the other two, but it remains a blast to drive.

Jonathan Palmer has had S8s for many years, although not sure if this is to do with the Audi-Palmer tie up.

Met him at Bedford once and he had just driven back fro Hockenheim in it and he said it was brilliant for trans-european jaunts.

I'd agree, though, that Audis tend to be 'safe' but 'numb' compared with the best BMWs and Mercs. Rwd is still the driver's choice.

I've driven an S8 and also an RS2, the RS2 was by far the better all rounder, but always wanted to lunge off, amazing bit of kit but a bit too nervous feeling for my tastes.

It's my 500E on Auto-Journals. Amazing piece of kit, genuinely powerful and surprisingly nimble handling.

Take one for a test drive and you will either get it or not, if you enjoy the drive it'll be a car you keep for a long long time.

Dave!
