my fuel gauge is fine with a full tank in it but once you start to get near the 3quater half way it bounces up and down when coming to a stop it settles down and gives a true reading ive heard this is a common prob just wondering how hard to cure.

Simple - when you go round a corner, slow right down. Also - no sudden acceleration or braking, just drive like you were on the way to a funeral.
Why not put a gallon reserve in the boot, then you can find out where it runs out. It will splutter a little when it gets really low.
I just fixed my fuel gauge. I had to prise off the front glass cover and solder one of the terminals inside (the copper had been bared but never soldered - Smith's quality for you ;^).
What I didn't realise was that the needle has to be reset with an empty tank, so when I put it together it would read 1/2 when it got down to empty, and it read full most of the time.
So last weekend I happened to have an empty tank and set the needle to zero. Now I don't have to drive around with a multimeter in the car! Incidentally the resistance of the sender on empty is about 210 ohms, in case you need to set it up on the bench.

NOOOOOOO!
Don't deliberately run the tank dry - ever!
The fuel runs through the centre of the pump and lubricates and cools it.
In TVRs and in Rover SD1 circles (I had a VDP EFi) the vast majority of fuel pump failures occur within a week of the tank running dry.
Be warned, be safe, be half full.

As my brother once pointed out - if the needle is bouncing up and down then there must be fuel in the tank.
It's when it stops bouncing you can start worrying
I carry a gallon in the boot and put it in when I get desperate.
I've never run the tank dry though; the extra gallon is there to ensure I make it to the forecourt.

OK well another way of doing it is to run it down to 1/4 full.
Then take it to the petrol station and brim the tank.
Take whatever you put in away from 43 litres and that's what you have left in there at 1/4 tank.
You could repeat this for 1/8th full, top of the empty bar, etc, as you build up confidence.
