Im currently working as a Shepherd but can no longer make a living out of agriculture on our wonderful little island (Im a little bitter).

Ive always been into cars and love driving and feel Ive got something to offer.
I would just like to know what being a driving instructor is like? If anyone is in the process of training to become one or is an instructor then I'd be very greatful to hear what it is like?

Cheers Folks.

I expect it will be a good deal more nerve wracking than shepherding, and according to some people it doesn't always pay that well, unless you work long days and keep pretty busy, but you ought to seek other opinions on that. Good luck anyhow.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

My brother is a self-employed driving instructor paying a fee to a driving school to provide pupils to him. He would certainly agree that it is difficult to make it pay. At £20/hour lesson, after deducting car running costs and fee to drining school, he will make less thn £15K/annum before tax on 25 lessons a week. He runs a fairly basis Clio bought new on finance over 3 years. Extra lessons in a week make a big difference as his standing costs are already covered. He averages 20 miles a lesson and for each extra lesson above 25/week he makes about £12 clear profit. So 30 hour lessons per week would give him a 'wage' of towards £18K/annum before tax.
He does of course work every evening, most of Saturday and part of Sunday, because this is when people want lessons. His time off is mainly during late morning and early afternoon during the week!
However, he does enjoy what he does and has a high pass rate. Recently had 12 passses in a row.
