Ford Fiesta (1992, carb) starter

Since Tuesday, the starter of my Fiesta (yes, I know) still spins but the engine doesn't turn over anymore. I suspect it doesn't engage anymore.
Can anyone shed a light on how to fix this?

Always worth hitting it with a mallet to see if it sorts it....although they tend to be on the way out once they start sticking..

I've seen cases where the starter pinion has worn the teeth clean off the flywheel in 4 places, usually on 100k+ town stop-start-stop-start motors.
