Heatshields (again!)
Discussion
Sorry to bring this one up again, but was just after a bit of advice. Been told by local OPC that the heatshields on my 996 TT are all corroded (exhaust and turbos) and need to be replaced.
Im a little dubious as to whether this will COMPLETELY resolve the problem im experiencing which is a rattle at low revs as I can also hear a slight rattling when the car is idling. Any ideas???

Hello
Heat shields are quite prone for corroding as they have a tremendous amount of heat to cope with,as they are bolted to the turbos ! they cost £26 per side and take anywhere between 3-6 hours depending on how much the nuts are corroded anjd if a stud snaps off.
Your rattle is more likely the exhaust shields on the box it self they come loose and is no real easy fix you should be able to pop your head underneath the back of the car and find you can move the heatshields which are attatched top the exhaust you will find them all loose and vibrating.these can take some time to fix properley.

Thanks for that Mike, fingers crossed that the change of all 3 shields cures the problem and the rattle, what confuses me is that the old exhaust shield was refitted in order to solve the problem a couple of weeks ago! Maybe it has come loose again??
Will provide an update when I get the car back on Sat. Any other advice greatly appreciated!

I suggest you change ALL of the heat shields once your mechanic is in there. Nearly all of the cost will be labour taking stuff off to get to the shields and then putting it all back together.
I had them done on my car while the bumper, cats and exhausts were off for other reasons. I think the total cost of the heatshield parts was between £100 and £150, so not really expensive in parts alone.
