Hi all,

I am in the market for an out and out track car, something light, fun and extremely fast. I like the look of the Westfield XTR2 but figure there is no better group of guys (and girls??) to ask for a bit of friendly advice and a point in the right direction.

The budget is probably maxed out at around 25k pounds and not looking for anything remotely practical!! I am interested in things such as ease of build, reliability, quality of the kit and of course the drive!

I look forward to your input!

hi

with 25k to spend there is a lot of choice, down to personal preference as to which one to go for. By the way you have worded the post you are building yourself?

Westfield XTR with Hyabusa power would be cool

Personally if i was in your situation i would go for a seven type (Mk or similar) with maybe a tt engine or s2000 engine, then trailer, spares and some cash for track days. But just my 2p worth

Think you have a nice situation. good luck

Zx12 Mission ?

Busa Fury ?

Radical sr ?

Jade ?

Loads of choice with that sort of budget.

I thought that the Radical would be way out of my budget, must take another look!

Not mad about the seven type shape, looking for something a little more agressive such as the Radical, XTR etc. I am very definately keen on a build as well, want to get my hands dirty on this one.

Do you guys have any experience with building these cars?

Thanks for the help.

This budget would also build an awesome Murtaya lightweight, at £25k you could end up with 400+ reliable bhp and an all up weight of approx 800kgs, plus of course 4wd allowing you to use the power regardless of rain or shine (please note that I am biased, AMS is my company but thought that the point was valid nonetheless).
Neil.

Thanks Neil,

I will take a look but to my preference is for something a bit more specialized for the track (i already have some modified BMW's for everyday traffic light racing!)

I am also not too keen on having to tear a donor vehicle apart for a whole bunch of parts, i would rather get the vast majority of the kit from the manufacturer. The reason for this is that i am stuck down here in South Africa and finding the right donor cars at a reasonable price is tough and there is not a whole lot of support in taking them apart.

Has anyone had any experience with the Toniq R? XTR2?

I am pretty tall, 6'4" so if you think that might be a problem with any of the cars i would appreciate the feedback.

There is a NZ member with an XTR2, (Kiwi XTR2) who should be able to advise... if he doesn't pop up here you could try the NZ forum or pm him.

If you want a bit of mad fun then putting a silly engine in a Westfield XI could be good for a laugh (but I'm quite biased)

With that budget you could get most kit cars built with pretty much all new parts.
If you really want to get you hands dirty, you could track down an old single seater race car and restore it, but then you would probably be limited to using it only on the track and need to save some of the cash for a trailer and running a tow car. Oh, and have space for them both! You could even get the right one and take it to the Goodwood Revival

I'm here bounce

I'm 5'11½" (shortish legs and longish body) and it's comfortable for me. Not sure about 6'4" . . .

How about you emigrate to NZ (it seems as though every other Springbok already has) and I'll take you out for a test run at one of the local tracks

Depending on budget, any of these, I reckon
www.racecarsdirect.com/viewlisting.php?view=8300

www.racecarsdirect.com/viewlisting.php?view=8145

www.racecarsdirect.com/viewlisting.php?view=7932

All guaranteed to be faster than you are, more focussed for track work than any kit car (they aren't compromised much, if at all, by road use considerations) and will kick seven bells out of a Seven or similar, pound for pound.

Careful with racecarsdirect though. Easy to get carried away on there.

For a kitcar, even at £25k, I think I'd struggle to buy something capable enough to match the performance of any of those above. The XTR2 doesn't match up and there's little if anything else similar out there.

:: Edited to add ::

At 6'4" you'll fit in a Radical. I'm 6'3" and the SR3 is very comfortable. There's as much space in the SR4 and more in the Clubman (single seater). I tried an early XTR2 and the driving position was all over the place - maybe it's better now but it wasn't good at the outset.

It's something of a tough job to identify a really capable track car you can build yourself, though. Could you cope with buying a Radical, stripping and rebuilding it with new joints etc, and call it your own work?

Sounds like it would be worth you looking at the Kellforms Retoga (www.kellforms.com) or the Lynx AE (www.lynxae.co.uk).

They didn't originally but they started offering a kit version recently.

I dont think Westfield sell the XTR2 kit any more either, so if you're dead set on building it yourself that might not be an option either.
