Clatter Cams are the early camshafts that Cerberas had fitted, and general opinion is that they did produce more power, if you have them you'll probably notice a real power increase as they come on cam at about 3k rev. The clatter cams have a really pronounced 'tappety' noise as though they have a 1/2" tappet clearance!

The 'clatter cams' had a higher lift/different profile than the later quieter ones, which were changed to make the later engine quieter.

When did they change over to the quieter engines?

How would you know if you had clatter cams?

Any info appreciated...

You will know if you have clatter cams, when you start the engine from cold they make one hell of a "clatter" funnily enough - (bit like and old diesel taxi), as the oil warms up it becomes a bit less noticeable, at least I think that's the case as its hard to hear over the scream of the engine when it comes on cam at about 4000rpm followed by a cacophony of bangs when you let the gas off!

clatter cams cloud9

Exactly right, on start up the engine sounds like a london taxi, CLATTER RATTLE CLATTER, yikes then as the oil temp rises it quietens down, and yes when the needle on big clock on the right gets from just after the 3 to just before the 4 the world goes backwards very very quickly hehe that and an overfueling set-up gets rather interesting...albeit rather expensive and very ungreen, but hellish good fun evil

I had fun today, abusing the engine, and thoroughly enjoying 2nd and 3rd gear. whole thing sounding like a bucket of spanners being thrown down the stairs.

The bastid used to drink Optimax like George Best, and put out more hydrocarbons than Red Adaire, but the spit back and pops were just sexual

Chucking in more fuel, so that at higher revs as the extra fuel is thrown in you get a richer burn to compensate for the extra air being thrown in at higher speeds. as you lift off the unburned fuel is ignited in the fannymoulds and 'hey ho' automotive audio porn is created hehe

Starting up with a loud CRRRAAAAAAACKKKKKKKKKK !!! in the lower deck of the Dover to Boulogne car ferry is rather amusing too hehe especialy when the occupants of the car behind let out a rather loud scream.

I know I am evil and heaven is only a distant pipedream ..... do I care?
