VXR8 Auto or Manual ?
Discussion
Depending on your likely mod/power upgrades there may be more expensive restrictions to overcome in terms of the auto box handling really big torque.
Take a peak at Ozzie forums thru drivvers club links to get an idea what people have to do with torque converters etc..
Other than that I guess it is down to preferred driving style...

The 6L80E trans is used in 2.5+ ton pickup trucks, so Im sure its tough enough. The issue with a few of the modern auto's is the trans controller is very complex and in some cases does not allow higer levels of power before faulting into limp mode.
This often requires physical modifications to the trans to trick the controllers, different valve sizes etc. So for near stock Id say it was a valid choice, but dont expect firm hard shifts in performance modes with 500-600bhp etc. Not at least in the short term until the controllers get cracked fully.
If you do a bit of searching on the GM Allison trans you will see what the troubles with the controller on that does and this is like 5 years after their release.
So the performance choice is on the manual. Unless you want to spend on physical mods to the trans and/or aftermarket controllers for the time being.

Well I've driven both back to back. Firstly the manual is much improved over the Monaro set up both it terms of effort and feel. I've driven out of London with our car and sat in the M1 q for 2 hours and it caused no more discomfort than sitting in my Vectra VXR but the added benefit of blipping the loud pedal occasionally for fun.
The auto is good , not as good as a beemer or merc 6/7speeder but as good as the boxes we offer. It is responsive and handles the power/torque easily , if anything it'll prove tougher than the manual.
The choice is really down to your driving style. If you're commuting in traffic a lot and don't play tunes with the exhaust , get the auto. Otherwise the manual is ok for UK traffic.
In Oz 50% are autos , on our 'advanced' orders retailers have ordered 56% as autos.
