Hi Guys/Girls.

Found my first problem that is irritating me curse. Nothing too detrimental to my new found excitement but would love to sort it anyway.

The Chim is fitted with the Pioneer KEH - P4830R/P4800R head unit. For some reason every time I stop and start the car the original information is lost and it resets itself yikes

Basically if I set up the equalisers, store radio presets etc everything is forgotten the next time I start her up. Just wondering if this is a known issue with the head unit or could it be that it is not connected to a permanent live ?

Cheers Peeps..........

It sounds like the permanent live isn't connected to me. I think you'll need to do some tracing with a multimeter

The reception is great (by everyone who sees her).

No seriously the unit works a treat when it is running, even the sound is better than I expected !! And I have no problems with getting all my favourite radio stations. I don't use it on the blast back from work, just the exhaust note for company. But I do have a bit of a fetish for Sarah Kennedy in the morning, I'm a bear first thing and wouldn't trust my reflexes that early (6.30 ish) so have Sarah soothing me into the morning.

It is just annoying that I have to retune it all once I set off. I thought it might be a lack of permanent live, just wanted to ask before I start to rip it all out. The veneer is delicate around the unit so wanted a second opinion before commencing. Any other thoughts apart from this ?

I know what you mean about the veneer, mine broke taking teh radio out - I want a brushed stainless dash!

Yeah i'd say either the permanent live has come loose or you have the 12v ignition and permanent lives the wrong way round. Some iso adapters come with these two the other way round. If this is the case, there will often be a connecter just after the iso (on the head unit side) on each wire so you can swap them round to suit the setup on your car. The easy way to check this is to look at the headunit manual and check which colour should get ign and which should get 12v (usually yellow is 12v and red is ignition on a pioneer from memory though it may be the other way round!) then just stick a multimeter in there and check that this is correct and each is getting the proper feed.

Hope that helps!

Jason,
Do you have the instruction manual, if not you can download free from the Pioneer website.

Link, my money is on the perminant live pin being disconnected. It could be that the previous owner was trying to prevent battery drain.

Just a quick question from an electrical numpty confused - would a permanent live mean the radio would work with the ignition turned off cos I've got to have the engine running to have mine on. I changed the head unit myself and found there were no iso connectors so bought some and wired them up as best I could from looking at the colours of the wiring. (before someone says - it didn't work without the ignition on before either )

Some headunits can work with ignition turned off, but usually not to prevent you from draining the battery. The ignition feed is just used to let the unit know to turn on using the live as a power source. The reason you can't turn the radio on without the key in the 'on' position is that the TVR ignition barrel (a Vauxhaull part) has nothing wired up to the first turn position (or mine doesn't anyway!). This means that turning the key to the 1st stage will do absolutely nothing. If you were to wire up a feed to this position (there is a terminal left free) and then wire that to the ign wire on the head unit you could get it to come on on first turn (though you would have to be careful not to leave it on for too long so the battery doesn't drain as in any car).

Hi guys.

Thanks for the replies, it has confirmed my initial diagnosis. Looks like it is a careful radio removal and some Multimeter work !!!!

I do have an operational manual but it has no installation/schematics in it. I followed the link too, cheers theaxe, but the website couldn't find my model. Or I'm doing something wrong !!!!

If anyone has a copy of the PDF file for the KEH-P4830R/800R Could you email me it ? A schematic would help me find where the permanent live connects to the head unit after I find one in the dash.

Cheers peeps !!!!

You're in luck. The KEH-P4800R has ISO connectors on the back. The loom on my 1999 car terminates in ISO connectors: yours most likely will too, it being a 2000 model. Having such dedicated wiring, the downside is the problem is unlikely to be in the wiring behind the unit, unless it has previously been 'modified'.

Hi Peeps.

Just thought I'd let you know. The radio is now working a treat, it was as you assumed wired direct to the ignition and not permanent.............

Thanks again
