MPs' shock call for bike speed limiters

By Sean Warwick
29 March 2007 07:42

A new threat to fit bikes with speed limiters has surfaced this morning.

The House of Commons Transport Committee has said action is needed because of the high numbers of riders being killed or injured on bikes compared to cars.

Their report said: "We recommend research on the viability of introducing speed limiters on motorcycles in order to stimulate a sensible debate of the options."

The committee has also highlighted bikes as not being sufficiently green and suggests more work is done to reduce pollution caused by bikes.

MCN will be updating this story continually as we find out more - so keep coming back for the lastest developments, including what campaigns will be run to oppose the recommendations.

We will also be making sure all motorcyclists know how to make their voice heard on the issue to their MPs. In the meantime, make your opinions heard by posting to the "Discuss this" link at the foot of this page.

The growing problem of nuisance minimoto riding is also raised as an issue for possible further legislation.

So here we go again. Government policy introduced by stealth by "picking off" small groups before moving on to larger ones. I can't help thinking that if the Bikers lose this one, the DfT will swiftly move onto "sports cars"

Discuss...

Some how I think I shall be seeing one of these devices in a few years time. Not a biker but it all seems to be geared up from the EU. Our vans are already nobbled.

As deaths in collisions involving police vehicles rose agin last year and a five
fold increase has happened since 1997, I think the Police should be the first
to be fitted with speed limiters. They are clearly becoming the most dangerous
group on the road.

This is another Nanny state stupid idea that we must not let happen.

Good god, when is this crap going to stop, should we just give up now and stay in bed for the fear of getting hurt?

Like speed has all to do with most motorbike accidents, it's the bikes not being seen, at least enforcing floresent paint might actually help, wankers the lot of them (polititians).

Of course, coming off your bike at 69mph will have no adverse effects whatsoever

Catso makes the point.

There comes a time ( thankfully ) when the public says up yer arse to the ivory tower politicians. It is a great pity we are not like the French, but even we do have our limits.

Most bikers ( and sports car owners ) already tune or modify their bikes or cars - junking standard exhaust systems is the norm.

If rev limiters become compulsory, bikers will just remove them or bypass them.

Where this gets interesting is that by doing that, they will effectively be without insurance...so how long before many say ' why bother, then? '.

This could get way out of hand as it leads to no MOT or tax, and suddenly the government has a big revenue and saftey problem.

However, the truth is that if we ALL did this, if we ALL refuse to accept draconian measures, the government HAS to give in - for they cannot put us all in prison.

We need more French people here.

If fitting a race exhaust to a bike doesn't invalidate the road traffic act part of the insurance then removing the limiter wouldn't do so either. I think it's only claiming for your own damage that could be a problem.

it is one thing talking about standing up to the law, but when it comes down to deeds, it takes a lot of bottle.

But yes, if we all stood up, we caould all be counted.
