Just been on the CaymanClub forum and it seems that there is going to be an announcement as to a new Cayman variant in the very near future.

www.caymanclub.net/showthread.php?t=10311 - towards the bottm of the thread.

I can only hope that is the case. I'm just about to order but I'm going to hold off for another week, just in case!

Great news if it happens. Though it does beg the question... how much should it cost? If a Cayman RS costs almost 60k (for example) - would you buy one over a low mileage 996 GT3 RS? Hope Porsche keep the pricing sensible.

I think you probably would - don't get me wrong, I love the Mk1 GT3 - in fact it still hasn't been completely crossed off my list. But I do think that a fully focussed Cayman, stripped, with a healthy power hike could possibly be more accomplished given the platform's outstanding balance.

Anyway, it's all conjecture, so I'll just hold back a tad longer.

Has been talked about/rumoured for quite a while. Would be a stunning machine and would be interesting to see how sales of 911s would be affected.

From what I can gather at the end of that article (which is over 2 yrs old!), is that it would be in limited numbers only.

Also, as it would be pretty hardcore (I have to assume) with minimal creature comforts, I doubt it would appeal to your average 997 punter who wants a nice wedge of performance but matched with a comfy & luxurious package.

I think if it was the standard Carman S with, say, 340bhp then I would imagine it would take a huge chunk of 997 sales - but that ain't going to happen.

Personally, I doubt there'll be a RS Cayman. The car's problem is that it's too expensive relative to the 997 and used 996's. So, I'd speculate that it would make more sense to release a Club Sport version, that would cut it to a more basic spec, shed weight and have all the "S" bits. As in the 968 CS.

As for an RS: Dream on. Why would Porsche put any 991 sales at risk?

Doubt there will be a Cayman RS, not so sure they will bring out a Clubsport version....the thing with the 968 Clubsport was because it was less well equipped it was the cheapest in the range. Porsche seem to be doing well enough with the Cayman in sales terms as it is...higher price, more extras means more profit....why should they bother?

Agreed that the slow 968 sales is why they brought out the CS in the UK. I thought the Cayman was suffering similarly slower sales than they wanted (and agree with your line of thought exactly - hence why I suggested it based on my previous comment)?
