Just had the pride and joy serviced yesterday, good job, running well and MOT'd into the bargain... however after paying what would be a decent monthly wage for many, or the equivalent of building a new school in Ethiopia, to my tried and trusted main dealer, on the way home I started to think... with the sad demise of TVR, is there such a thing as a main dealer anymore, surely not if there is no company, and if not then what is the value of a full TVR service history... are all previous dealers not now independent?

Was thinking the same thing. Also I dont trust anyone within 100miles of here with my Chim so I have decided to do all the servicing myself and keep a detailed record of each thing I have done, with reciepts and photos etc. Not sure how this will suffice as a service history but its the only way I can be sure that my Chim is being properly looked after.

IMHO if your car is more than a few years old anyhow, then I just wouldn't bother with TVR service history. The best reason for maintaing a FTVRSH is warranties or resale value, but I'm not convinced that they do a better job - not at all!!!!

At the end of the day your car is being serviced by a mechanic that could work for TVR or work any other garage, just cause he works at TVR doesn't make him a good mechanic (the only thing is he's probably seen quite a few TVR's, but again that doesn't mean much)
I'd always use an independant, in fact I used to use a chap just down the road from me that did a lot of work with race tuned Rover V8's and I think he did a much better job and knew a lot more about the engine than anyone at the TVR garage ever did!

I wouldn't worry about the TVR service and I don't think most people buying an older car will worry if its not full of TVR stamps (as long as it has been serviced and looked after) the TVR stamps are certainly not worth the extra money, I'm sure of that.

Of course all IMHO

I think buyers who know anything about TVR's are most interested in the fact that the car has been regularly serviced (either time or mileage)...and a good Indie garage carries a lot of weight...it certainly doesn't need to be a main dealer.

i would feel better if the garage has good TVR experiance though. A little knowledge can be more harmful in the wrong hands than no knowledge at all.smash

I took an almost new TVR to the factory for a service, thought, yeh, factory stamp, gotta be good. What a BIG PHUCKIN' MISTAKE that was. One of my 'staffies' would've done better. Go with someone you know and trust, just 'cus it says 'TVR' means jack shit in the real world. Just speaking as I find.

I do all my own servicing, because then I know its done properly. I know what oil is used and when, I also know that the brake and clutch fluid are changed regularly.

How many people actually bother to take off the exaughst to grease the prop shaft? Well I do.

a good indy stamp in the book is worth as much as a dealer stamp IMO

if you guys went to buy a chim that under its current owner, had no stamps in the book, but had a full and detailed record of all servicing work carried out, including reciepts for oil, brakes, etc and photos of all work carried out. would this put you off? would the vehicle be worth less than one with stamps?

I think it would depend if the owner was 'known' to me.

If it was one of the 'gurus' on here, I'd have no hesitation - it would have received the attention it deserved right when it needed it...yes

It wouldn't stop me buying, but I would certainly need to understand more about the owner and his skill levels/understanding of the car etc.

F**k sake, why is this country so hung up on full dealer service history! What's important is that the car has been maintained and you can prove it. I gave up on VAG service long ago with my last several Golf GTIs and my current VR6, dealers have one objective, to RIP YOU OFF. They care about nothing else, I have so much experience of this, don't get me started.

Regarding TVRs, there are LOADS of TVR specialists out there, now and regardless of the TVR company status. Just find someone you trust.

Regarding the value of a car w/o dealer service history, cars loose so much value, the worlds worst investment ever, it really makes hardly any difference, and if you have a good history trail, that should be all that matters.

IMHO
