So which one would you go with (sure there must have been a thread on this before but i cant find it.... boxedin)???

Have access to both so ££ is not an issue

have a Powerbook G4 1.6ghz soon to have 1.5gb of memory. Currently all my pics are on Iphoto. I plan to keep all my pics on my laptop hard drive - currently have about 6k pics

All views much appreciated

Thanks in advance CAB

Aperture is not a Photoshop replacement, its more a very sophisticated image management tool, with excellent features for RAW processing.

If you need more processing than Aperture can offer then use PS in conjunction with it.

The closest comparison to Aperture is Lightroom, I guess.

If you're Mac based, Aperture is a fabulous piece of software, as you'd expect from Apple.
It can 'reference' you existing iPhoto library without copying it, which is really cool.
Also, all of the editing is non-desctuctive, so your master RAW images are retained as negs in effect.

Beware though, it needs good spec hardware, ie., the best Intel based Mac you can afford.

Its on free 30 day trial at present

I don't have CS2, still using Photoshop 7, I've been waiting for CS3, which was released yesterday bounce

Check minimum system requirements for Aperture.

As I mentioned, it was on a free 30 day trial, give it a try, best way to find out....

Aperture. I think you'll find it very sluggish on your computer (if it runs at all, the hardware demands are pretty high).

I downloaded the trial version for a play and besides feeling pretty slow even on a good spec G5 Powermac, I wasn't impressed with it.

My choice is Lightroom which I find much nicer to use and I'm very happy with the output quality, appreciably better than Camera Raw in CS2. I don't know what improvements CS3 will bring though...

Adobe does a free 30 day trial for Lightroom, well worth a go IMO

Aperture is the dogs sticky-out bits, Lightroom appears to be a copy of it, from what I can tell.

However, as has been said, to make it fly you need a really top spec Mac.

My Powerbook (G4, 1.5GHz, 1.25Gb RAM) didn't even let me install the Aperture as it's below its minimum spec. But CS2 runs fine on it.

Has to be a G5 or Intel chip to run Aperture I believe (though I have heard rumours of a crack to stop the processor check)

bloke in the apple store said 1.8 would be sufficient - think they introduced the programme before they launched the intelmachine (i could be wrong)...... howevere my experience of "sufficient" in computing terms = v slow....

Thanks CAB
