My ignition key has been getting harder to turn and remove from the lock over the last couple of months. It got so bad that recently I couldn't actually turn the engine off!!

Just in case anyone else is suffering, a tiny amount of WD40 squirted into the lock makes it as good as new...

Kicking myself that I didn't think about it sooner...

good idea - would wd40 not strip any other lubricant from the lock though? - which begs the question is there something better?

I wouldn't worry too much - I had the same problem about 2 years ago, and mentioned it when it was in for service, the guys at Henley did the same thing with the WD40, and it's been fine ever since.

A very small amount of decent teflon cycle chain lube is perfect for the job

Agree, good stuff.

WD40 is great for instant freeing up, but mechanics will confirm that the problem with WD40 in this kind of use is that it does remove any remaining (higher viscosity) grease, then it is so thin it evaporates/rubs off quite quickly leaving less lubrication than when you started rolleyes

white spray grease is probably your best bet

So spray with WD 40 to loosen/clear things up. Then spray some white grease in there to keep things lubed.

no, just use the white grease, putting WD40 in before hand will not allow the white grease to hold

Except that the grease most probably won't free up whatever is stiff. You can wait a day before putting the grease in so the WD 40 has evoporated/dried up/run off.
