C2 or C4 996, Which one?
Discussion
Hi
I’m looking to buy a 996 and thought I’d go for the C2 version, but I haven’t driven the C4 and just wondered how much difference there is between the 2WD and 4WD versions of the 996.
The performance figures show the C4 to be slower in a straight line and through the gears, of course this only tells a bit of the story, but I never felt the need for 4WD in 911 before, so is it a waste of time?
I pretty sure the C4 will be quicker in the wet, but is it slower in the dry compared to the C2 in the real world.
Like to hear from anyone who has owned both cars,
Regards

driven both back to back quite a few times....C2 with psm is the chap
with the 2 wheel drive version you still get the feel of the weight transfer of a traditional 911 (to some extent) the C4 is very flat through braking and acceleration out of corners, probably a little more sure footed at the limit, but less involving because of this.

It's not a question of which is fastest, the differences are neither here nor there. It's about the precision and the feel and feedback that you get with a really good rwd 911. 4wd does make sense on powerful turbos, where its function enables sudden power applications to be distributed to all four wheels whilst maintaining traction.

C2 all the way. With a C4 you get added weight, less bootspace, added complication, less feedback, added purchase expense, less economy. My last 996 was a C4, and apart from anything else, it never seemed to tire of running out of petrol. My fault in all 3 instances, but I could never quite get used to how much it drank compared to a regular C2. It seemed to go off on a binge every time I got distracted and forgot to check the trip computer. Then, at every instance where the car predicted it would carry me another few kilometers, it would just fart and give up. Mind you, it was a Tip as well (don't ask) which didn't help. Aaahh. The memories. Many's the time I stood at the side of the road shouting at that thing and thrashing it with a stick Basil Fawlty style.

The C4 makes progress that the C2 just can't do. In the dry, the difference is negligable, in the wet, its huge.
Out of wet bends the C2 will be flashing PSM lights at you and backing power off, the C4 will just be using all the horses and getting on with the job.
They are both good cars, but if you want the best stability and the most usable performance, every day, the C4 has the edge.
The turbo isn't 4WD for no reason.
Track cars (GT2, GT3)... how many people use them in anger in the wet?

Totally disagree, not at all my experience. Could always floor it in the wet, only massive standing water caused traction issues. That was fun though, I'd rather sort it than the front wheels.

Sorry, but again not anything I ever experienced. I never once thought, hmm, I need more traction. I often thought I'd like less, and I never thought, how inconvenient I'm going to have to control this car myself.

Found the 996 C2 too stable, too competent. It would need a lot more power or a lot less grip to make it more attractive to me.

It's got a lot more power. People don't call it dull for no reason.

Loads that I know of.
Fun isn't always about ultimate a to b pace.
