We are seeing more and more CCTV in our towns, cities and villages, and on our roads. They must make it easier to work out what happened,ie who started what, who crashed into who etc....but are they helping CONVICTION rates,or are they just cutting down on the amount of investigation time for you boys ?...genuinely interested as I read somewhere we are caught on camera an average of 300(?) times a day in the UK..

IMO, they are increasing crime, as they take bobby's off the beat, the pictures are often fuzzy, they can't see round corners and all you have to do is wear a hat and sunglasses and no-one can see who you are.

Yet another stunning example (along with speed cameras) of how inept this governements crime and punishment policy has become.

I was involved in a fight a few years back - was punched in the face in the middle of town - CCTV missed the incident, but luckily the 5 bobbies across the road didn't....

Could it be that local coucils who run these things think that by having a cctv system they need less BiB?

Councils don't decide how many BiB's are on patrol.

I think they help conviction rates. Case in point - last week interviewed a chap who had randomly punched a member of the public full force in the side of the head, resulting in injury. He denied he'd been anywhere near it let alone struck anyone throughout the interview. Then I played the CCTV tape to him, which clearly showed him and the blow and how there was no provocation, possibility of it being in self-defence, etc... Excellent quality even though it was 22:30 and low street lighting. Got a full and frank admission of the offence and charged him.

Offender has previously been convicted of similar offences as a youth, and was already on bail for an almost identical assault a few weeks previously. Personally, that CCTV was invaluable in getting the charge (his word against the victim's otherwise) and a rather unpleasant character will hopefully get some custodial time for that.

The Bulger case.

I would have thought that would show the value of CCTV

Councils don't decide how many BiB's are on patrol.

So are as many BiB deployed in cctv areas as in non cctv areas?

it helped convict the killers. That is a good thing surely.

Why isn't there a webcam in the room where the CCTV operators sit?

Who would watch it?

And who would watch whoever is watching it?

Makes no difference whatsoever, in my experience.

Anyone who wanted to. And that's the point.
It's a lot less sinister if you can see who is watching, what they are watching and watch them.

It's suddenly no longer a one-way exercise in power.

I find CCTV comforting, not sinister.
I find the idea of people watching other people doing their job rather sinister though.
I speak as one who worked in a custody office where practically everything I did was recorded on CCTV.
Would you like that in your place of employment?

If there's nothing sinister, then the disinfectant power of sunlight can only help keep it that way.

You didn't like having CCTV on your workplace. I have two that cover my front door.

I'd like to see who sees what is seen.
