Me too - no answer.
It's cheap, but it is high mileage. Assuming the engine will need work soon, at a cost of 5k then it's really a 19,000 car.
There are low mileage cars not much more than that, so I suppose it depends on what the market would price the car at after the work....

Ditto.

That was my first question... whether it's had engine work done or not.
Anybody know if you can still buy the wear and tear warranties given they were actually a third party thing? My shout was if it's had a rebuild in the last 10k, or if you can still get a warranty to cover the engine, then it's worth it. Still, to buy and sell on over a 2 month period that wouldn't matter too much - there'd be some punter who didn't know about the engine issus.
Other things to consider for anyone else pondering on it (either as an investment or as a toy):
- brakes will need replacing soon if they haven't been already
- 2nd/5th will probably be starting to lose the syncromesh in the gearbox by now
- Stone chips if it's not had a front-end respray
- Condition of leather interior
- Whether it's just had a service or is just due one
- Shocks may well coming to the end of their natural life

Yes you can get the third party warranty - but they expect a 2hour inspection with tappet check beforehand (I believe the tappet check is a new requirement)
You'd be a fool to think you could make money out of this though IMO.

I've been called a fool before, and I doubt that's the last time I'll hear it.
I'd be tempted to offer £14,500 in cash on the spot. And relist it at £16,500, accepting £15,500 for it as the weather picks up.

19k is that still not cheap considering it would have a 'brand new'engine
I'm not sure, maybe.
Say it's 19k + discs and pads and a service.
However, it could be 15k all in, recently serviced with a tappet and top end check which I'd buy tomorrow.
It really depends on the car. I mailed him as soon as I saw the advert. It could be a great buy, but may not be.

Hi
So why does it need to have had a rebuild?
How many 2004 speed 6 engines have blown?
It is only early speed 6's than need a rebuild
Seems as though he reallly just wants to sell quickly in the market
as it is at the moment.
Cheers Tom
Shoot me down now! all you negative bastard out there.
So why does it need to have had a rebuild?
Because all mechanical items wear out eventually. S6s weren't built to do 100k+ miles.
How many 2004 speed 6 engines have blown?
Less than 2003s, but more than 2005s. I.e. it's got to be taken in context of age and mileage as well as any changes to the design.

No, it's every engine ever built by every car company on the planet. Ever. It's all just a question of "when". And "when" will come sooner, on average, for an S6 engine than a Honda or a Toyota. On average, you're probably talking a 30k lifespan or so for an 04 car, I'd guess, by the time you've factory in dodgy builds that never make it through PDCs, etc. But, just like life expectancy, as you move towards the average age of death, your own predicted point of expiration goes further into the future.

Could well be - someone could get a really fab bargain. I know I'm interested. Could also be suffering engine death-rattles. Or be a Cat-D write-off that's not been declared in the ad as such. Or could have an interior smeared with blood stains that won't wash out from someone having had a party with a herd of dead goats in it. *shrugs* Could be any reason.

Only just spotted that bit... wonder why they're doing tappet checks now. I'd have been more tempted to strip the top end down and check for other more sinister issues if I were the underwriter.

That's happened to me in the past
That's why I fancied red and black leather in this one, rather than plain black - the smears just look like artistic detailing.
