Hi folks,

Just been out and put a deposit down on an MX-5. Only problem I could find was that the electric windows were stuck in the up position. I'm guessing it could be a fuse, but are there any common issues with the system? How expensive are they to put right in a worst case scenario?

I'm still going to buy the car, only 53k genuine miles from new!

On the MK1 there is a handle on the door that turns. If you wind it one way the windows go up and if you wind it the other way they go down. Quaint, isn't it paperbag

the electric windows on mine a little iffey. normally fine, but occasionally the drivers window wont go down. im not sure if there is an easy fix, but i hope so.

i know that at some point i plan to take the door cards off and properly grease up the mechanism, cos i think this should be done every few years.

it might be as simple as the switches have broken. if so taht is a 20 minutes job and £37 from here:

There may be a window-lock switch on the dash by your right knee. Make sure it's 'off'.

I fell foul of this and was cursing the dealer for doing something, as they worked when I checked it over and test drove it.

ROFL, thanks Kinky. I was wondering if there might be one of those child type lock switches. Would make sense since neither window worked and the rest of the car was immaculate and just serviced.

I had similar trouble except mine didn't like going up. I sprayed a PTFE based (so it sticks, the '3 In One' one seems good and it doesn't damage rubber, plastic etc) spray lube down the door from the base of the window and they've been fine for about 2 months now.

They're starting to go a touch slow again so I'll take a minute of my time to repeat it tomorrow.

PS: Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s being fitted all round tomorrow, can't wait!

The windows are cable operated , if they go too stiff the cables snap , a mate bought a 323 and got told the switch had gone , so popped to a scrappy and i fitted the switch , still nothing , pulled the door card off to find the window had been wedged inplace from inside and the motor disconnected , gits !

The cables snap far too easily, as said before. The motor will almost certainly get broken as well. When mine went I bought a kit that replaced the whole mech with a different one, it was easy to fit and work faultlessly. Only thing is I cant remember where I got it from.

My drivers' window cable snapped last week, after having been quite slow for a fair old while (despite lubricating the rubber front channel with silicone grease and the metal runners with white grease). MX5parts sells the bits you need to fix it - upper and lower window cables, winder drum.

It's a fiddly, messy job, but not too difficult. There's some tips in the garage section on miata.net.

Anyone know if there's a manual window conversion available/possible? My windows are deathly slow & manual would be less trouble than electric I'm guessing...
