Hope someone can help. Get into the car, turn the key, wait for the fuel pump to prime, when she is done turn the key and nothing. I can go through this process three or four times then for no apparent reason she fires up. Any suggestions?

Also a different problem when I start the car she is very lumpy and without gas just dies, can I put this down to a faulty stepper motor as when the car is warm there is no problem, apart from different idle speeds ranging from 800rpm to 1800rpm. Any help will be great.

Cheers Matt

You need the stepper motor wound out to get enough air in to start the car (with a preset amount of fuel from the injectors.) This happens as you turn the ignition OFF, (ready for the next start) and you will hear a buzz from the motor if its working. If you know its sticky, clean it first. (Aparently spray carb' cleaner is good for this)

Give the eartn lead between the offside of the engine block and the chassis ourrigger behind the tyre a wiggle. I had the same problems, took it off and cleaned it, hey presto no problems.

The none start sounds like the solenoid on the starter motor is on its way out, you could try just cleaning it up, but the solenoid maybe on its way out anyway.
I replaced my starter motor with one from a landrover shop online, it cost about £60. I also put some heat protection around the solenoid.
I've had no problems with it since (touch wood) April 2005.

Not sure about the other problem, apart from if mine starts to rev high, cleaning the steppa motor usually does the trick.

I think that would be my first job before going down the garage root.

Regards

Paul

cheers,

Have changed the plugs, leads, cap and rotor arm but still lumpy. This is why I think I need a new stepper motor, is it worth me buying one and giving it a try?

As for my other problem with the Starting I will try that earth cable. The thing is that once it has started I can turn it off and restart many times over and this problem wont happen again until I leave the car until the next time I use it. Then I get in the car wait for the fuel pump to prime and turn the key and nothing again, weird.

Have you tried cleaning it yet? It could also be an exhaust lambda sensor as they usually give rough idling when cold.

Also you could look at teh David Beer hot start kit, this mod gives the starter motor more juice as it uses a relay and the ful power of the battery instead of a losing volage/current down the existing cable.
Try a search on here for the hot start problem

I'd suggest cleaning the stepper motor before you splash out for a new one. If you do a search for 'stepper motor' there are several items that explain how to take it out and clean it.

Edit: sorry others got in first and things moved on!
