Fined for small number plate!
Discussion
Earlier I was followed for half a mile by a marked car. I pulled into private property and got out.
The policeman parked along side me and said he saw my "small plate". It is small but still..... should I really be fined £30?
Anything I can do to avoid the fine? It's only £30 but its the point of the matter! On his radio at the same time he was called because 3 youths were racing around without helmets on their mopeds..... obviously my number plate is more important
He didn't have a ruler with him and I hardly think he has calibrated eyes! Also, can the Police fine you on private property? Not like the car was on public road at the time.

Well lets see, if your number plate does not meet the regulations regarding size, font and spacing then yes. Does it?

Well the shoplifter no doubt could say the Police should be dealing with burglars instead, after all it's the more serious offence.
I'll personally prefer to take the view that you have brought it on yourself, if you hadn't been offending they could have concentrated on something else.
The offence was committed on the public road, where you are reported for it doesn't matter.

If he didn't measure it, he has no proof......
I was stopped for the same thing, the officer got his ruler out and measured my plate at 88mm wide.
No fine for me though

The minimum size of the plate is not defined in the legislation.
Here's one for you then. Hypothetically..
Your car gets stolen.
You report it to the police.
It is circulated on the PNC.
It is passed three times in a day by an ANPR car or passes through an ANPR camera site.
Because your number plate is too small, it doesn't get recognised.
The next day your car is found burnt out.
Of course, you can probably offset the cost of replacing your car against the odd speeding ticket you may have escaped with ;o)

Agreed.
The 'other side of the coin' is that your son/daughter/wife gets run over. There are a couple of witnesses who see the driver spped off without stopping. All they can remember is that the letters were in italic and bunched together, and they cannot make a match to find the driver and/or ANPR cannot pick it up.
This is actually one piece of 'pointless' legislation I can support - probably because I could never see the point of messing with the original plate. I know some cars make it diffcult, but I suppose the risk of £30 each time is the choice you make!

Mind you possibly depends how small it is! The poster may have admitted it was small! After all he doesn;t deny it was small, just asking why he got fined.

He got fined because he admitted the offence of the plate being small.
The OP should have just said it looks fine to me, or denied any wrong doing.

He was given a FPN, that is a conditional offer.
If he admits the offence he can pay it, if he doesn't agree he can go to court and plead not guilty.
The choice is his.
