106 gti - dampers

Can anybody give me an indication of how long these last?
My car is an '01 with 62000 miles on the clock currently on the original dampers and springs. It seems to have lost some of it's orginal composure in the corners and under braking. The problem is that the deterioration is so slow that I can no longer remember what it was orginally like! For someone who is technically inept like myself is there anyway of checking them other than driving?
Will I be able to tell much difference with new, good quality dampers, springs and bushes? (Any recommendations?)
Any advice is gratefully received.
