205 gti gearbox problem please help!

HI i'm only a young lad and i've got myself a 205 gti but thats another story for another day.

The gearbox or more to the point the clutch cable. there appears to be a shaft missing from the gearbox its a recon so is in good nick. its BE1 so reverse is at side of 1st.
the shaft that is missing is part of the mechanism that activates the clutch . but whats it called and how is it set up. i'm sure i could figure the set up out but help makes things so much easier.

Struggling to understand what is missing. I've just had the clutch cable replaced on my 205 although it is a different 'box, but things 'may' be in the same place.

On mine there is a lever from the clutch to which the cable connects, which then runs to the bulkhead and through to the pedal. At which point of that route is the 'shaft' missing?

it goes from the top to the bottom of the bell housing on the gearbox.

Are you on about the inch long rod that goes between the clutch arm and operating lever? I think its the BE1 that has this.

no it'll be about 6inch (rough guess) from the top to the bottom of the bell housing
