I can scarcely believe this.....

Home Office minister Baroness Scotland said:
We are hitting criminals in the pocket to make sure crime doesn’t pay and victims get services we want them to have.

So basically, if we speed we are criminals?

Hmmm. They will fine us because we are easy targets and if we do challenge a speeding conviction in court we usually have the money to pay. I can see this 'levey' being added to the cost of a speeding ticket in the near future.

It's nice to see the motorist is being victimised again.

Long live Tony Blair and the Labour government... Maybe not.

In the daily Wail too

It was brought up a few years ago and achieved a similarly incredulous response. Now that we have detail on how the money will be spent, it's clear that it's an extension of Labour's non-jobs for votes policy.

I wonder how long it will be before someone wealthy enough stands up to this in the high court/EU courts?

This is incredible, amongst a new incredible thing nearly every week.

I expect Brown will announce in the next budget that Labour will add VAT to this new £15 tax.

hey why don't they jail us for the all the crimes they can't solve

We could have a 100% clear up rate on crimes

judge :>Yes you were caught for speeding last week so 3 points and £60 fine please

:turns round to spin huge wheel of fortune:

judge:> And as bonus you are doing ten years for the bank robbery last week also

These particular papers may not be presenting a balanced view but putting a slant on it. It appears to be anybody having a fine imposed by a court will pay the surcharge, i.e. not just motorists. The money to be used for victim support services, i.e. not just victims of domestic violence. If you’re the victim of a hit and run, or dangerous driving you would have access to victim support services.

Yeah, if you look at the papers running this and then think about the way it works it's generally anyone getting a fine will now pay a surcharge to the fund. Seems ok to me

I think that is a good point, but everyone on here will see it as an attack on motorists.

Not everyone. Just the ones for whom the article was written.

Many ppl only read the first 2 paragraphs in a news article then form an opinion based on that often leaving it that point now that they know all they want to know. That's why they left this bit for the 5th paragraph in the Daily Mail.
5th Paragraph said:
The £15 levy will be imposed on anyone who faces a fine, including drivers who challenge a speeding ticket in court. The cash will be used to appoint dozens of domestic violence counsellors to help bring alleged cases of abuse to court.
Clearly the newspapers are looking to provoke a response from all motorists which seems to be a better option then appearing to side with those ppl who might end up in court with non-custodial sentences after committing more serious crimes.

Why is this surcharge only going to be applied to people who take it to court and not the ones who just pay? To disuade people from trying to defend themselves? You already have the threat of paying a bigger fine if you disoute it and don't pay like a good little comrade....

Read it again, it says anyone who pays a fine, regardless of why. I can't believe the Sun and Daily Mail have got you all boiling your piss over, what seems to me, a fair way of helping victims of violence.

the quoted text says "The £15 levy will be imposed on anyone who faces a fine, including drivers who challenge a speeding ticket in court." which to me seems to indicate that it only applies to people who challenge the fines?
