Who wants to swap a 996 for my Cayman S, Roll up, roll up!!!
Discussion
Hi all
I’m thinking I’d like to get out of the Cayman S and changing to a 996.
So I was just wondering if any 996 owners would like to trade up/down (depending on your point of view) to a nice shiny, almost new Cayman S.
Ideally, I’d like a 3.4 996 with low miles, it’s has to be a C2 with a 6 speed box. Consider most colours expect light sliver.
Anyone fancy it?
The car and my contact details are listed in the Advert

why do you wish to swap??
The Cayman not getting used really, not by me anyway, my wife drives it to work and the only time I get to drive it, is when I pull the car up the drive to tuck it into the garage every night or reversing out in a morning.
So I fancy something for Weekend use and a couple of trackdays, something I can mod and have a bit of a tinker with.
She can have a boring car for work and I can have a toy for the weekends and a bit of cash to put in a house I've just bought. That's the plan anyway

I assume she's agreed to stop driving a fully expensed Porsche and change to a sh1tbox.

I think you really want a 996 GT3

If the Cayman is really worth £41K thats just about GT3 money anyway, or a bloody good 3.6
he wants some cash out of the deal tho.
I think a 3.4 996 is a smart move if you want to release some money. I would suggest getting the car lowered on techart or cargraphic springs as the original set up is way to roly poly. If you can get a decent one at about 25k, you wont suffer the kind of depreciation you will get on the cayman over the next few years.
Its a terrific car and I ran one for 2 years before my gt3 with lots of track days thrown in for good measure (where it was very quick and great fun too).
personally wouldnt take that reccomendation of aftermarket springs as unless its a matched spring and damper kit then it wont be as good quality as porsche o.e which they spend £XXXXXX developing.
just find one with sports suspension
a 996 c2 would be no better than a Cayman S for track fun - imho an exige or elise is much better

No offense but i think you are mad going from a new warranted pampered car to an old banger 3.4
At least get a 3.6 facelift.
You can still get warranties on it.
Wont be a clever move if u get a 3.4 and end up doing a new engine on it.
There goes the £15000 cash u get back !
Also the neighbours will wonder whats going on !

What you are suggesting doesn't really make sense.
If you want a cheaper road car, then a 3.6 996 is a terrific choice. A Boxster'S' would be another option. In both cases, with 'sports' suspension and a couple of minor mods you could enjoy the occasional track day.
Alternatively, buy a cheap track day toy like an elise, caterham, old M3, 968CS etc.Spending money amd modifying an early 3.4 is probably a waste.
A GT3 might well be the best buy because values are unlikely to fall much further so you can remove the usual depreciation factor from the costings, and it is the 'real deal'.

The Cayman doesn't get used much and I want some cash back. It's very unlikely the engine on the 3.4 will go pop and you can warranty 3.4 with a third party one anyway. Don't believe everything on here you read about 3.4 996's exploding into a thousand piece's. My other previous C2 ran like a dream everyday for 18 months before I sold it

It does if you take into account the budget, which you are not btw.
I want something I can use as a normal car if required, the 3.6 is too expensive and Boxster S to slow. The mods I intend to do to the 3.4 will be basic, maybe full exhaust system and I'll look into a decent suspension which can do both track and road, but I only plan to do a few track days a year, then it's pointless having something like an Elise or a hardcore track car, like the Exige 220 I test drove last week. I don't intend to undertake radical mods in an effort to improve track times of the 996 or shave off vital seconds; it's just a bit off fun.
Yes the Cayman is better and I’ll miss it, but I've got other priorities for the next 12 months and the 3.4 is the right choice for me with my budget.
