Clutch fluid reservoir question

My clutch has felt a little floppy of late. Checked the fluid level and it's empty. Topped it up but it still feels a little floppy - any suggestions?

Secondly, the garage put some rubber sealant on the access cover (with four screws). Why would they have done that? Do the covers have a tendency to come loose?

Expect you clutch will now need bleeding... Oh and the cover leaks water into the driver's footwell hence the need to seal it with mastic.

So how do I bleed them?

Well it's the usual process of attaching a tube to the bleed nipple and filling up the reservoir then opening and closing the nipple as someone else depresses the clutch peddle! Harder to describe then actually do. I'm sure someone else will give a better description. Else get a mate who knows what he's doing...

well I asked my wife to help but she got upset. All I said was, "help me with my bleeding clutch while while I fiddle with a nipple" and she got uppity with me. Women, strange creatures!

Yes but where as the fluid gone,have a feel round the clutch pedal pivot area for damp,also reach under the car and feel around the slave cylinder area that fluids going somewhere

No sorry Rich totally disagree with that, fluid level bears no relation to clutch wear.
Steve's problem is almost certainly a leaking master cylinder which has dumped its contents
onto the carpet over time.

The level does not drop with clutch wear it actually comes up,and you would have to be using some aggresive clutch abuse to notice this change

Less doom & gloom please... IMHO the exposed & cooked slave is more common failure than the snuggly covered master

If your carpet is covered in goo, you are unlucky.

Also worth checking the solid hydraulic pipe that runs from the slave back up to the master, this can get a tiny hole & leak fluid, it gives the same symptons as a duff slave.

Unless your under the car watching the fluid exit the pipe after you've replaced the slave (wondering why the fk it wont bleed) its very difficult to spot. Also check the pipe joints

It's just about driveable so I think I'll take it up to Fernies and get them to sort it out! Probably a half hour job for somebody who knows what the hell they're doing!
