Well I was rather lucky after getting pulled overtaking an unmarked police car at speeds he believed to be in excess of 120mph (as he was doing 110mph as I went passed).
He gave me a right b*llocking and told me I had two choices:
1) Keep speeding and lose my license.
2) Keep speeding and possibly die / kill someone.

I've chosen option 3 which is to slow down, although he didn't give me that as an option.
After that he sent me on my way...I was still shaking this morning

Lesson learnt, but would a Nip and three points on your license have the same effect?

I doubt,i have always found a bo**ocking from plod far more effective on me

Lucky!

My girlfriend got stopped at 115 (she was doing more, classic scenario where she didn't check the sliproad enough) on a sunny January afternoon on a quiet M5. The lady officer booked her for 95. Now she drives everywhere at the speed limit. Bit frustrating sometimes ...

... in your case why was PC Copper doing 110 then? If he was on a shout then he wouldn't have had time to stop you.

I've seen them sometimes go tearing off down the motorway at high speed, then pull into the inside lane among some lorries/numpties and wait for everyone they just passed to speed up. Crafty, but usually spottable!

OK Gemini, but surely it would be fair to let others 'have a good day' at 110 as well, wouldn't it?

To be fair I suppose he did by not booking him!

Mind you, I still think the 'cynics' are right

I have stopped people that have overtaken me when I have been on a shout.

I always tell them that the reason they are not being dealt with is that I do not have time but tell them that I will record their registration and circulate it over the force radio as having been warned for bad driving at excessive speed. I then do this as a general observation message for all those other patrols (and camera vans) to be aware of.

The fact is that if the officer was driving at 110mph and that was for any Police purpose, then it is allowed. If he was speeding to attend a private meeting or some other situation not connected with his work, then it is not. He is unlikely to tell the person stopped why he was driving at that speed and is certainly under no obligation to do so.

The only time he would be obliged to divulge what he was actually doing was if he recieved an NIP from a camera situaion, or a complaint about his conduct was made by the person who was stopped. anyone complaining about the conduct of an officer in these circumstances having been warned about that sort of speed may well need some serious trick cycling

The fact is as Gemini said, he may have just been feeling benevolent. You just have to accept that Police officers when driving Police vehicles can get away with excess speed because
a) They are allowed to in law and
b) It is somewhat difficult to disprove their explanation even if they were not speeding for Police purposes. ("Guvnor I saw a suspect car some distance ahead and had to get a head of steam up to confirm it wasn't the one I thought it was! )

Madcop - Could it not be the case that he was just an officer (alone) in an unmarked "normal" police car (not a traffic car) with no recording devices to prove my speed or does that not matter?
Naturally I am not saying I was speeding, just that he believed I was. I am of course very grateful to him for not making any more of it!!!

Depending on why the chief wants to see you and the urgency of the meeting, it could well do. If it was to deliver his golf clubs inadvertently left at the train station as he stands on the 'Tee', then technically no, but again would be difficult to prove if a 'more plausible explanation was given'

Hyprocrisy, most definately . This job however does have a few perks left!!!!!!!
Do as I say not as I do or you will suffer is the basis of this perk!

Of course, Police officers are always honest and show integrity in anything they do. The fact that the golf clubs are in the boot is merely co-incidental

You could well be right. Not all unmarked Omegas are traffic cars. They are generally though Police spec and as such will have an IRS calibrated speedo fitted.

If it was a crime squad car or a tactical support vehicle, the officer may have been in uniform but not the slightest bit interested in Traffic matters unless someone is blatently taking the p155. My experience with non traffic specialist officers is that if they can deal with an incident without subsequently writing too much about it and then having to wait for a wasted day hanging around Magistrates court, then the talking to scenario is much more likely than the ticket one. That however could change very quickly on the attitude of the errant driver.

Naturally I am not saying I was speeding, just that he believed I was. I am of course very grateful to him for not making any more of it!!!

Are you suffering form a touch of Altzeimers? I think in your original post you said you were!!!! but not at the speed the Officer thought you were!

I'd be surprised if I'd have gone over 80mph even on a quiet motorway in the dead of night.

Whoops, I fear my halo may have just slipped.

I can't remember the exact details but there was a case twenty or thirty years ago that enshrined this concept in law. A Plod was late for a court appointment (to give evidence as a prosecution witness) and was caught speeding on his way to the court. He was prosecuted for the offence and claimed an exemption as, although he was in his private car, he was on urgent Police business (the case he was giving evidence in would have been thrown out otherwise) and therefore exceeding the speed limit was appropriate. Bobthebench can probably provide chapter and verse, if he's so inclined :>)

Was recently an off duty policelam done for 130ish up here, on the M9. He said he had earlier been passed by a known drug dealer who he was trying to catch up with. Think the excuse was thrown out, and he was done.

When I'm stopped by plod, I'm usually bricking it, but even so I EAT DIRT. If the copper sees that you know you are in his hands then they are more likely to deal fairly with you. It's the same when speaking to anyone who has power over you - how, for instance do you talk to your boss when they catch you breaking rules?

I was once caught on the M74 in Scotland - maxed out in my corsa, 110-115 mph (depending on whether it was a hill or not), clear skies, sunny day, no-one about 'cept plod hiding up a slip road... pullage occurs, I eat sh1t, copper gives me ticket for 94.69 mph, how about that? informs me I am very lucky, I tell him thanks, & drive at 70mph all the way!
