Bullet Cam Mic set up

Hi everyone. Just treated myself to a new dogcam and MP4 player and have had a little play about with it. Now I need to set up the mic as there is nasty distortion. I have placed it in the boot even covered it with a fleece but still bad. Has anyone any tips to sheild the mic. All I really want to get is the V8 and not the conversation of my passengers.
