I recently got a £50 fine when parking in Tescos in St. Helens for more than 2 hours which is stated on signs which I didnt notice until I saw the ticket on my window and looked for signs. The ticket is filled in except the date box is there any loop hole or way of not paying the ticket. To be honest I feel ripped off by Tescos having spent a load of money there on petrol since I have begun driving and spending loads of money on food there aswell.

Cheers Guys

Do you really spend a lot of money at Tesco? Do you have a Tesco Clubcard?

If the answer is yes to both, it may be worth writing to the local manager pointing out how disappointed you are .......... etc and promising never to darken his tills again.

I agree.

However, the rule is there to ensure people can park outside there and shop.

Now, if you *were* shopping there, then I would go in with the receipt and ask if they can recind the ticket.

If you *werent* shopping there then I would be tempted to say it is a fair cop whether or not you have spent money there on other occasions.

Either way though, you could use the 'money I spend here' tactic to see if they can budge, they probably will.

The other way is just to ignore it. Whats the worst they are going to do? Send you some letters you can ignore?

Tell 'm you broke down and had to go off on foot to seek help.

Also point out that if you'd have broken down in a Sainsbutys car park they would have provided assistance from the AA to get you out of there. They do at ours anyway.

Its run by euro car parks, I do have a clubcard and have spent a fair bit on petrol and food ther up until lately as my commute takes me past other garages these days. I dont think that tesco can stop euro car parks from charging me, the only thing I can think of is the fact that they didnt put the date on the ticket. On the day I did genuinely go shopping then went off but I threw away my reciept as I didnt buy anything that I would need to take back.

Ignore it and when they send you letter state that you didnt know who was driving the car that day as they cant take a car to court and the dispute is with the driver and you can then claim that you dont want to incriminate yourself. Stupid things private parking tickets I can sympathise with the supermarket though, I did exactly the same thing at mine as the car park was being abused by a local call centre leaving our customers nowhere to park. Try writing to the store manager, they'll probably be quite sympathetic if yoy were genuinely shopping there.

They'll only care if you get your plight in the local newspaper. Then they'll be inundated with people who saw the deal in the paper, got tickets, and are claiming compensation. Then with draconian force, Tescos recoup the enevitable compensation payment by being just that little bit more tetchy about parking.

As an example they could introduce a scheme whereby you put your credit card into the post by the entrance, it deducts £50, and then if you leave within the two hours it'll credit the money back to your card on the way out.

Typically this will save on the salaries that they would have had to pay for parking attendants.

If you call me cynical, you'd be right.

I ignored the ticket my car received in a private car park some weeks ago. General advice was to ignore it and await developments.

Have done so and heard nothing so far. Don't know how long it takes DVLA to give out the address though!

This scam is taking off with supermarkets all over the place.

Our local co-op has recently sold the rights to cash in on its customers to a nasty little outfit based in Preston:

www.parkingeye.co.uk

They charge people even in the middle of the night when the shop is shut and even betterm the "no return within 4 hours" has caught out local taxi drivers when they've been carrying pensioners and disabled people to do their shopping, so now you can't get a taxi to the local supermarket

Private parking is based on contract law. So as deevlash suggests, euro carparks can only persue this if they know who the driver is.

You can either ignore the ticket, and face a day in court and possibility of bailiffs - or write back and point out that you don't know who the driver was and have no record of who it was.

Unlike with an S172 from the police, you are under no obligation to tell them that you were the driver. Without this info, the ticket isn't worth much.

From the eurocarparks site

"Usually the parking charge is £25 to £50 and offers a £10 discount for early settlement. Habitual offenders are followed up by using our official search facility at the Driving Vehicle Licences Agency in Swansea - this provides us with registered keepers addresses and approved correspondence commences to recover outstanding charges."

Notice it says "Habitual offenders are followed up" It sounds like they only chase those who break the rules a lot

Anybody got any valid ticket numbers? I've been trying to punch in a few to see what happens.

So if I say i dont know who was driving or just ignore the ticket what happens if they have cctv of me getting in/out of the car? Is it not illegal for the DVLA to give details to private companies without my consent due to data protection act?

Best wear a face mask or baseball cap in future when shopping there. Mind you what warning signs are there about CCTV and who is in charge of it? May be Tescos, are they allowed to share it with their car park operator?

This happened to me 2 years ago in a Morrisons car park. I parked there in the morning (in my company car) for 30 mins, (noticed the Eurocarparks PFY * entereing my reg in his machine and though nothing of it. I then returned 6 hours later for an hour. 2 months later, my company informed me that I had been fined for parking illegaly! There was a no return within 4 hours rule, but the PFY was too dim witted to think about this when he re entered my reg for the second time.
The leasing company just paid the fine then told my employer....banghead My employer was threatening to take the money out of my wages at one point!
Two years later and I haven't heard anything more about it.

* PFY = Pimply faced youth
