Rear windscreen....gone!!
Discussion
Had an almighty shock at the weekend.
Pottering along on the A428 and suddenly heard a loud bang and the rear windscreen was gone.
Roof and windows were up, clips intact.
Gave me and the wife a terrible shock.Thank god it was 11pm and the road was empty. Doubled back and found it in more or less 5 pieces
Initially thought it was a blowout but somewhat relieved I didn't end up killing anyone. Rather nasty shock.
Anyone with similar experiences and more importantly where can I get a replacement, how much will it cost?

what's the story with these windscreens?
there's some footage on you tube of a tuscan going through a speed trap at just under 180mph and no mention of any problems with the windscreen (the top gear thing about beating a speed gun) so there must be a way of securing them.
is it easy to not put them back properly?
or does opening a window at high speed cause pressure problems?

Quite a few Mk1's suffered from rear screens popping out. Usually when roof panel out and at reasonable speed. I believe the fit was just too loose as the screen ever so slightly too small. I know when I got my Mk2 the screen was a much tighter fit. Those bloody awful catches may have something to do with it also. A few times I thought mine were done up correctly only to find one undone when I opened the boot.

Had exactly the same issue with mine last october approx 90 mph, pure luck the screen did not hit anyone or anything. Previously done way in excess of that speed with no issue. The replacement screen I sourced (from Kerridges) was larger all round and a better fit than the one that blew out. It seems that the factory was aware of this issue and made the above mods to the screen size. IMO this is one issue that SHOULD have been a factory recall on the grounds of safety. My replacement screen was £140. I know Leven Technology have them in stock for about the same price, clear or tinted.
Good luck

I have one of the smaller screens and so am a bit worried by these reports! I have been more concerned so far with water leakage and reckoned that the clips were not holding the screen high enough - this would also reduce the amount of screen buried in the roof and increase the likelihood of it popping out at speed. As a temporary fix, I have machined a piece of hard rubber to fit inside the clips and this does hold the window higher and tighter but places a lot of pressure on the clips.
Anyone else come across a professional mod for these clips or is the only fix a new, larger screen?

I would be very interested in a better design of clip. If there is enough interest from others I will commision a revised/improved version.

It would be good to have the clips made of something a bit stronger.I was sure these were metal on my early MK1, but are plastic and a bit too flexible on the MK2.Some nice anodised alloy ones would be good.

I would certainly be interested in new clips, particularly if they were easier to do up and undo
What he said
I remember after a Tunnel run being stuck in an underground car park trying to get the bloody screen done up. Eventually it took 4 guys and a lot of swearing to do it. Garage adjusted clips somehow but it is still a nightmare. Mk1 was a doddle prob due to undersize screen.
