sure I asked this before, but can't find it.............

it's 2nd april, and girly I know has not renewed her car tax which ran out 2 days ago.

What's the actual score on this?, not that I'm condoning in any way.

As I read it it's something like.......
Drive it on a road and you're in bother. Keep it off a road and you do have 2 weeks grace to get it SORN'd.

Get to the post office pronto.

Alternatively just go online and tax it over the web, DVLA site instant update, therefore no ANPR issues (other than the normal ones ) Disc takes a few days to arrive. You can print out a receipt to carry in the car in case of a police stop.

Yes you can carry a receipt. However there are two seperate offences here failing to have tax and failing to display tax.If you tax it on the net after it has expired and then drive without a tax disc on display you could still be prosucuted for failing to display.

Use it on the road and if subject to a pull then expect to be reported for No Tax/Fail to display a current Licence.

No Tax is not a 'Police' offence but a revenue offence and Police would report this to DVLA for them to authorise prosecution. Fail to display is an out and out offence for which FPN can be issued there and then. £30 IIRC no points.

Renewing in 14 days (days of grace by practice only only not law) and generally DVLA will not authorise prosecution. Isn't a defence to fail to display.

Putting the vehicle off the road without SORN or continuing to use over a month after expiry then expect to get caught by the DVLA Computor sweep on untaxed/unsorned over a month and an automatich £80 fine.
