In my humble opinion:

1 needs focus on beak as well as eye
2 needs more contrast. Try adding highlight and shadow... that'll do it. (great composition though)
3 did well to get red - digital hates red
4 needs more depth of field, so that the tops of the petals are in focus as well
5 probably just me, but in shots like that I like to see the bottom of the trees as well. Also some 'pools of light' on the forest floor add a lot.

Keep it up. Where was number 2 btw?

I pretty much entirely agree with Mr Carter and he has put more eloquently than I could.

I do agree too with Mr Carter. In my very amateurish opinion, I think the beak looks a bit soft - is it out of focus?

Number 2 I (personally) don't think works well as black and white - love the shot, but I think in a really rich colour it would do the shot a power of good.

Regarding your black and whites, have a search through this forum for how to change them. It's not just a case of converting to grey scale (unfortauntely hehe) there is a lot too it and the final results really prove why.

Nice shots though, especially the tree one I think it has just the right amount of light coming through. Very nice

In Paint Shop Pro (Photoshop will do it better)

Colours> adjust> highlight/midtone/shadow> added 7 to shadow and 3 to highlight.

First up... I ain't no wildlife photogrpaher, so forgive me... I think this is the kind of sharpness that one needs to see in a close up of a creature (unless it's any of the male participants on this forum, for which GPS would probably suffice) - www.stevecarter.com/wild/w46.jpg

Martin's pic composition wise here is about as good as it get's methinks http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v52

and bobs for sharpness: www.lockstockphotography.com/microstock-photography/00071_coco.jpg

It's a good pic, but you need sharp lines and at least to see the eye to make it work (adding contrast hinders that!)

Sorry if I'm being a pain, but what the hell, it's a Monday.

BTW Simon, where are you going in the Lakes? I just moved from there and have good knowledge of where and when to get shots (in the quieter north lakes). Loads of pics on me' website.

Cartmel is great, but a shed load away from where I was. Will you get up to Buttermere, Loweswater, Crummock, Wastwater, Derwent et al? If so I'll post some locations. But it's a different world to Cartmel.
