Can someone clarify what type of engine the 5 ltr found in the Chimaera is?

Is it a version of the Rover V8 or TVR's own unit?

Sorry for the Newbie Nuggit questions. TIA

Ta. beer Technically the RV8 is a Yank lump to as originally moddified over the years from the base Oldsmobile lump Rover did a deal for in the mid 50's (they had given up on the engine - could not get the casting technique right).

I would rather attribute it to the BMW origins, and the spin that the Yanks were too stupid to get it working

BMW - what are you one about?

Please don't swear on here - I am easily offended.

A brief history according to me:

Yanks entered WWII when they discovered BMW had a V8 engine, conquered Europe & returned home with said engine. Couldnt manage to work out how to cast it properly, so duly copied engine basics ~ still main technology used to date. Be prepared for WWIII when Yanks need new engine design ~ so they must be due to invade Japan... just warming up in the ME. hehehehe

Yank - lump = Reliable (you really want SP6 type reliablity) - why complicate things.

Where exactly is this going?.................

Nowhere... Just pointing out the BMW heritage of the RV8 old chap, and having a bit of fun.

Dave
I cant see CJ & TCS getting serious with an unreliable engine this year...No need to slagoff the Sp6!

I like both, but driving an S6-engined car is very different from the delivery of say, a 'Vette. Basically, it's like a honking big bike engine - feels like there's no flywheel attached at all... As an experience, the S6 is the most intense and rewarding engine I've encountered so far, shame about the production engineering...

Have you experience a Really Tuned RV8 or LS6 - they spin up like an SP6 and have more power and alot more torque - (obviously std ones are not like this). I really like AJPV8 though - pity they never gotthen in the Chim or the Griff (that they were intended for).

A V8 sounds a good idea, but getting 8 big ends arranged to make the 8 cylinders work in harmony is not so simple. A straight 6 is actually a very good compromise. The demise of pushrods is hardly worth mentioning ..... All IMHO

Well, that's the point really - the S6 being a production engine after all. After you start building a factory std engine properly with scant regard to cost per unit and with MOT regulations as your only legal constraint, all bets are off. I've got a 4 cil Saab turbo engine that burbles like a good'un at low revs, sounds like a g*dd*mn Spitfire at full chat, spits flames on the overrun, has frighteningly quick throttle response as long as you keep it above 3K rpm and stays in one piece no matter how often you hit the rev limiter - but there's no unmodified OE parts in there anymore, whatsoever.

Similar plans for the 4.3 RV8 are unfolding as we speak... hehe

8 BIG ENDS!!? A V8 runs pairs rods on a common journal (i.e. 4)

V8's make for a much more compact easier to package engine. Not may Straight 8 around now!

8 pistons = 8 conrods = 8 big ends and 8 little ends. Common journals or not, there are still two ends to each conrod, and one is generally bigger than the other!
