Hi all!

Right i'm just in the process of sorting out some niggles and am not sure how to go about this one... When I start the car from cold, there is a loud squeak as the engine fires (which is louder if you start the car with some gas). As far as I can see, the only explanation for this is that the belt slipping as the engine fires. What is the best way to treat this? It never slips when the engine is running and also never slips if the engine is started from warm even with gas - I assume because the belt is warm and more grippy...

I gave the belt a quick tug and it seems tight enough, could it be solved if I just tighten it a bit more or is the belt on the way out??

Thanks,

Nick

The alternator belt is self tightening with a tensioner & therefore unadjustable.

If its a multi rib belt they go smooth and shiney either replace it or run the engine and hold some sand paper of any kind on inside and out side belt but watch what your doing and mind ya fingers

Try some belt spray although if the belt is on its way out this will only be a temporary fix.

My previous 500 used to do the same.
You can get an areosol from Millers Oils. Its called 'Belt Dressing'. Just spray on to the belt once in a while to stop it squeaking on start up.
Its not mentioned on their web site, but they still do it. Its £2.40 + VAT a can.
Unfortunately they don't do mail order, but you will be able to order it via a local distributor. Dealers are listed on their web site www.millersoils.net/index2.html
Let me know if you struggle to get hold of it and I will see what I can do to help.

I was just about to start the same topic ....

Funny thing is mine started to squeek for the first time last night (when cold) but I also noticed that when it was squeeking the revs where also droping almost to the point that the engine would stall?

i.e revs drop first the the squeek! Are the two problems related ?
