I have a 2002 Mondeo 2.0 C-TDCi

It has a heavy knocking noise comming from the back end when I go over a bump, i've been underneath the car and I cant see anything obvious, suspension looks ok etc, Ive been told that these cars have had problems with the rear subframes, how can I tell if it is this thats causing the problem ?

any help / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Check boot space for kids, mother-in-law or wife.

I would suspect that the rear subframe bushes have failed.

best way to diagnose them is to get underneath the back end (safely) and press the subframe up towards the body of the car, you'll either hear the knock, or you'll see the failed rubber bushings move

Check the anti-roll bar bushings while you're under there as well.

Yes it is the rear subframe bushes.

what sort of a job is this to do ? (has anyone done this and can give me any pointers)

It doesn't look to bad a job. (but its not listed in the Haynes manual ????)

Ps, I do have a mate who works for a tyre company with a lazer alignment machine ;-) to set it up again after (looks like theres a few beers coming his way)

any tips appreciated, cheers

There's always one ..isn't there.... I did say a 'metallic' knocking noise, when I go over a bump !!

we all know kids, mother I/L and Wives make a thud-thud, noise in the boot when cornering, but no noise when going over bumps !

(reminds me of hat old joke .... whats the difference between a Kangaroo and a Kanger-oot)

the sub frame isn't a bad job to change, but it does require the rear track being set again after it's been done.

the bushes also get glued in and the glue has to be left to set - to save hassle complete subframes are available pattern now from most motor factors

Job done... and it was'nt too bad.

I was quoted £160 for the whole sub-frame from local motor factors (they don't sell just the bushes)

I finished up buying a set of bushes of ebay for £29 !!

Dropped the subframe hammer & chisel the old bushes out, press new bushes in, in the vice, put sub-frame back in aligning thru the alignment holes & had wheel alignment re-set by mate who works for tyre co

Bargain !!!!
