griff ran out off petrol but with half a tank left

What a nice day for having the top down and take the lovely car out. But going down the country lane the car started to play up it seem to run out of petrol and run not to good not firing right. Then it stopped. It had half a tank of fuel in and I have checked to make sure there is petrol. So that’s off the list. More thing i can think it could be a fuse or a relay or fuel the pump. the fuel pump does make a noise for a bout 2 seconds when turn the key. any way over to you. thank you

If you cant pull a plug, smell the exhaust for petrol.. else you dont really know if its spark or juice at fault.

There are two identical relays side by side in the passenger footwell (silver in colour). Swapping them over usually rules out or diagnoses a fault.

Is there a huge 'whoosh' when you take off the petrol cap?

If so the tank breather system is somehow blocked, either the carbon cannister ( if you have one) is faulty or the roll-over valve is stuck

Did it spring back to life after ten minutes or so? That's a classic symptom of a failing relay, starts losing power when it's hot and then recovers when it's cooled down. There are other potential causes too, but I'd investigate the relay first.

thank you for the replays. right over the weekend i looked at the car to see if i could find the problem. take the spark plug out and but the lead in to a tester turn the key and the light flash so sparks seem to be ok. next thing i looked at petrol pump so i but a pipe on to it and turn the key and petrol was coming out. now im thinking what could it be. when i turn the key it just turn over but does not want to fire up.

Could be a fuel problem between the pump and the engine - did you try the two fuel relays (silver Bosche ones) on the loom in the passenger footwell? - if not try swapping them over or fitting new ones before going any further.

oh yes. its back on the road and about time with all this nice sun we having. problem was the dis cap and rotor arm also replace coil as well. fire up first time. thank you for the info and also ian @ sportmotive and David Gerald both A* service.
