I can here "told you so" ringing out. Got great deal at the local Kwik fit centre on a couple of 295/30Z18SN2 contis for the rear, got them fitted today by the manager and was able to watch every step, excellent result so far with old tyres off new ones fitted and not a mark on the rims. Tyres pressures done just the balancing to go, well they could'nt get the fixing bar to lock the wheel in place and after half hour of trying gave up.
They rang another centre three miles away to ask them to balance wheels to which they were told to F/off they were busy, area manager phoned and I arrive at other centre. tyres off after further wait, no happy faces here, on to balancing machine wheels locked in this time BINGO no wait, lid won't close, fiddle around with spacers still no can do! resulting in the manager telling the grease monkey to just put the wheels back on the car end of story, Well it was my turn to hit the roof, If you can supply these tyres then you should dame well be able to fulfill your commitment in fitting them. Im sorry sir but if you had come to this centre we would not have sold you these tyres, Bulls--ting Bast--d I told him as I had phoned that centre whilst shopping around. Anyway now I have to go to a proper tyre centre and get them balanced and take the bill back to Kwik Fit.
I had already placed the deposit before I heard about there reputation. My advise in the future would be to collect the tyres from them and take them to a garage you trust as there price was £190.50 each.

most garages will not fit tyres supplied by a another.
They do not want to risk damaging tyres during fitting that they have not supplied.

Sorry but that is rubbish in my experience, I've had numerous tyres bought elsewhere fitted by different garages

So at the risk of making an arse of myself, what is the difference between Precise Balancing and Un-precise Balancing (I assume they just take a guess at it in the latter.... wobble)?

In the Portsmouth area I think Denmead Tyres is familiar with mounting wide low profile tyres and the owner used to run a Lambo, I think. Not sure how price competitive they are.

As with all measuring jobs, there's different degrees of accuracy you can choose to deem appropriate for the job in hand. When you have wheels balanced by a regular tyre fitters, they try to minimise the amount of lead they stick to the wheels (I believe primarily for cosmetic reasons). This achieves, say, a 95% balanced wheel, which is perfectly acceptable for everyday motoring when the wheel doesn't spin above 100mph, and when the tolerances in everything else as such that balancing wheels to 4 decimal places is meaningless. However, if you have a car where the tolerances are much tighter, and the wheels spin faster, to say 140mph (thus magnifying the centripetal force as the wheel spins), there is an increased need for more accuracy when balancing the wheels, and 95% is no longer good enough.

So, they balance it to 99% accuracy instead, which typically means sticking more lead to the wheel and generally being more precise about the whole thing. Those standard wheel balancing machines can still do it all for them. They just select a different setting before starting the process.
