Can I really need new front discs and pads on my 2005 Boxster, I've only covered 16000 miles, normal road usage with a few spirited miles. Has anyone else had to have this done?

Take the front wheel(s) off and have a good look, inside and outside, of both disc and pad. Also look for wear ridges.

Corrosion is normally the big problem, especially if the car sits around for long periods of time in the winter.
Do you know if that's in fact the issue or is it something else, have you seen for yourself or had a 2nd opinion ??

Car is used on a daily basis. The engineers report from the OPC says that front discs are down to minimum thickness, and front pads are low. I am going to have a look tomorrow. I am also sceptical that both front tyres are at 3mm depth considering one has covered 10000miles less than the other.

When checking your tyres make sure you either get the wheel off or get under the car and check the very inside edges - the outside can look quite healthy when the inside is pretty heavily worn.

Remember that none of that work need be done at an OPC - its all bog-standard mechanics and any garage you trust can change discs/pads.
