Magic tailgate
Discussion
The one thing that is sort of annoying about my newly acquired RR classic (1990) is that the top tailgate opens itself on a random basis as you drive along and sticks up in the air like a comedy spoiler.
Not had a chance to look into the workings of the tailgate catch mechanism so far (just taped it down) but i'm wondering if it's a common problem, and if so do I need to buy a new tailgate or is there an easy fix?
Thanks in advance.

Its a very common problem. My Classic started doing the same thing and no amount of adjustment to the actuating rods made any difference. (There are two rods that run from the lock in the centre to the catches on either side.) The catches wear, as do the releasing ratchets and they become very sensitive to the slightest movement.
I replaced the two catches (bought two new ones off Ebay) and never had any more trouble.

Hi,first check to see if the bottom rail on your tailgate is bent. Stand at the side and look along the bottom edge. if it is more than 10mm deformed. Buy a new one.
It comes open, generally, due to the catches operating at the wrong angle to the striker, this reduces the movement and the catch does not operate in its full movement.
If your tailgate is deformed, do not be tempted to try to bend it back to shape as you will almost certainly break the rearscreen.
You can try to adjust the side strikers but this does not allways work.
Good Luck!
