Diff breather problem

Hi all, only had my 4.5 cerb since december so please be gentle.
My diff is gobbing oil out of the breather when i get up quite a bit of speed, massive embarrassing smoke screen! Had the car on the ramp at work and the breather seems to be just a stub with a rattle cap on the end. Does anyone know of a modification to do to stop the oil coming out. I did think about putting a tube on and fitting a bottle to it to try and measure how much is coming out.
Have tried the search facility on here before for other little niggles but cant get it to work today so any help would be much appreciated.

I would have thought it very difficult to over fill the diff as it is a 'fill to level' type oil fill plug. But i will check when i can next get it in on the ramp.

Loving the car tho!!!! Its a learning curve getting used to the long pedal travel, and using that as traction control lol. But when the road conditions allow it, full throttle 3rd gear, not lived until you experience that. Always had front engined fast cars before, well i thought they were fast, until i drove this amazing peice of Blackpool engineering!

Have to agree, sounds like it has been overfilled. It is possible to fill it to where the plug is then just screw it back in, but I believe that there is an actual amount you should put in (can't remember how much off the top of my head), this comes to just below the plug level. Therefore if it has been slightly overfilled then once it is up to temperature and you are giving the car a bit of stick
then it will push some of the excess out through the breather. The downside of this is that it constantly leaves a mist of oil all over the back of the car, this also covers the exhaust rear pipes and boxes and can cause the back end to smoke from time to time (just oil burning on a hot surface), but it will also discolour the stainless (if not discoloured already).

Yes, Mine went to offords last April for diff oil change and ever since then I've had oil dripping onto exhausts and garage floor. It's not much but it does lubricate everything underneath!
I'm surprised too that you can over fill but looking at the invoice they put over 2 litres in and reading the manual it says 1.6 litres required. I didn't notice it at first but then had the car on the lift and noticed the drivers side exhaust was black, after that it started dripping on the garage floor.
Only done a 1000 or so miles since then and it only happens after hard driving, hopefully soon it will find it's level.

Most diffs i deal with ,admitedly much more modern vehicles, have a plastic pipe vertically from the diff breather, and some have a large bore peice in the middle to accomodate any oil rising from the breather when cold.
The car was serviced when i bought it and yes the stainless exhaust down the drivers side is stained a bit black, will run it for a bit and see how it goes.
