Planning to buy a 996 privately going look at an early facelift and I'm looking for some general advice on any specific items to look for to verify the integrity of the car/owner. This would be followed up by a 111 point check prior to a warranty.

e.g How many keys should come with such a car, location of vin plate (windscreen), how to find out the option codes/exact spec of vehicle. Owner did not know if car had xenons??? it has satnav (pcm1) but no heated seats (on a cab). FPSH but previous owner was a garage owner (selling cars not at his house) which sets bells tinkling, one other before that.

What is a realistic private sales price for an early 2001 facelift 996 cab 20-30k miles I'm thinking 32-33k given the likely trade alternative of 29-30k. Any other pointers for vehicle specific info that points to a well looked after vehicle much appreciated. Is the 111 check as good as say Peter Morgan for assessing provenance/clocky-ness etc. At the end of the day, I think it is 50% owner assessment/50% car assessment when buying private. Thanks, Ian

Option codes should be on the underside of the bonnet - make a note of all the 3 didgit numbers, then google porsche option codes for the database someone has put together

the car should come with two "proper" porsche keys and a third thin chaueffuer key. However, this third key often gets lost and is not vital.

otherwise the simple checks are the best. you sound as if you know the options for your Pork so all that you see should be reflected in the options list. As Bermy said, one sticker is on the underside of the bonnet, the other on the inside page of the service manual. These codes should be identical and match the spec of the car you are looking at.

A 111 point check is a good way to go, but as far as I am aware the check only covers the items to be warrranted and as such a better more closer inspection by someone like Peter Morgan may be a good idea.

Look at the service history, note down the dates, mileages and locations of the work and then ring the OPC's direct. Can they tell you any more about the car? Do the recorded mileages tie in with any previous MOT's you may have access to?

When speaking to the OPC's is there any record of the RMS being replaced? Whilst carrying out a physical inspection, have a look on the underside of the car. Does the bell housing look "damp" if so this is generally the first sign of the RMS weaping.

Finally, is the hardtop available for the car? if not, why not?

Thanks, useful info. I saw a copy of a previous pmorgan report on a car that I was considering, whilst it was quite thorough I'm not sure it checked anything more than a clued up private buyer could check. The Adrian Crawford guide is a good one. Agreed about the opc check I just wonder whether they are quite as good on the provenance/bodywork stuff as the "brake disks need doing and rms".

996 prices seems to getting ever softer, been talking to an opc about a 04 Cab north of 40k but 02 cabs can be had in the independants for mid 30's. Private sellers in general need to see what the trade are asking before coming up with their bonkers prices. am I right in thinking that early 98/99 coupes are probably 18-19k max private, cabs are worth £2-3k extra over the equivalent coupe. Does the c4 command a premium over the c2? likewise is a tip worth more than a manual outside of london once it is over 3-4 years? I'd say no on both the latter questions.

Ah, but now it's really really probably up for sale rather than just kinda up for sale.... There's a subtle difference.

I agree with your first point but lots of private sellers think their car is worth more than it really is.

There are not many decent 996s of any age at under 20k TBH

Dont see cabs having a premium over a Coupe at all, after all there are lots of them out there

C4/2 no price difference (apart from when new)

Manual/Tip same but Tips less sought after

Something Diesel for the business and a two seater for fun... Probably an MX or a Caterham type thing. I can't face life without a ragtop on the fleet
