Speedo knacked - thoughts please!

Was out for a good long blat over Dartmoor and Exmoor last Sat - 6 hours driving plus stops!
Got within an hour of home and noticed the speedo utterly dead.
Not even a twitch out of it since then.

What's most likely to have failed ?

How is it driven? If cable driven, then snapped or come loose at the rear of the speedo or the gearbox end.

Check all connections first and check nothing has come loose.

The cable is a right PITA to fit if i remember correctly!!! Make sure its on properly otherwise it makes a REALLY annoying noise, or worse still that and doesnt work!!!

It will most likely be the cable. Get someone like Speedograph in Nottingham to make one up for you. TVR usually made these up too short so they have to turn too sharply. Just send the complete inner/outer to Speedograph and get them to add an extra 9 inches or so to the length when they make up the new one. That way it'll last longer. They're not too hard to fit.

Duncan have a word with Neil or Richard at TVRCarparts/Dulford - I understand they have just recently rectified exactly that problem on a big Wedge and have/or can source the cables

Looks like another visit down to Dulford sooner rather than later.
Glad to hear it's likely to be the cable breaking.

Annoyingly, I'd just left Dulford and the long blat was the 'scenic' route back home.
My window had popped out it's runners and as the door inner had been pop-riveted to the door I decided to let someone else take the pain. Lucky I did - the rapair was a mare! The glass had popped out because the channel had rusted through! They had to bond the glass into the channel as the channel is no longer strong enough to grip the glass. Repair should last a few years, but I will definitely need new channels soon and Neil hasn't got spares in his treasure trove.

If its not the cable the ring that drives the speedo can travel about in the gear box. Mine didn't work at all when I got the car. faced with the normal £500 bill for engine and gear box out I started some investigating and managed to move the ring about via the drive gear opening. Its now worked for 15000 miles so worth a try if its not the cable.

Another thing could be that the drive behind that ring could be stripped. The drive is a nylon gear. You can pull it right out of the gearbox (while g/b in situ) to inspect it.
